I have heard a rumor Hilux will be coming out next year with a super Charged Diesel engine.

Is it just that a rumor?

Can anyone confirm?

I doubt it. I would have heard something about it by now. There will be a supercharged petrol hilux coming out by TRD thou. Personally, I think it's a wank, because the power increaee they achieved with the supercharger they could have done with some exhaust, intake and ECU mods and not bothered with the $8,500 supercharger, and would have been able to sell more of them when they come out for a few grand cheaper.

Unfortunately it is not TRD's fault, because their hanbds are tied by the japs, the japs told them what they wanted with a small budget and thats what they had to work with. They are not completely with the final product as they wish they could have done things better by weren't allowd to.

For example, Toyota Japan has a very big fear of any increase in centre of gravity, so with the new TRD Hilux, they fitted slightly larger tyres, but to keep the centre of gravity the same as stock, they actually lowered the suspension slightly, even though they using better bilstein shock absorbers and springs....go figure.

:( :-)

If there was a supercharger put on a diesel, it would be the first I could ever think of. Supercharging and diesel compression don't work. But if the boffins at Toyota need a model upgrade to shift units and put the v8 twin turbo diesel from the 200 in a lux, Ill be the first on the waiting list. 8-)

I can remember reading about some guys with 4.2 Patrols supercharging their diesels... I think maybe 4x4 Monthly may have done a comparison between a SC and Turbo... I guess they never really took off.

Anyways a TT V8 in a Hilux would be awesome. They would outsell every other ute 10 to 1. Maybe one day the brass at Toyota Australia will wake up?
You can buy the Tacoma in the US with the 4.7 petrol V8, I think even that would sell really well here. Probably steal a lot of the traditional Commodore/Falcon market. Especially now that the Navara offers a lot of competition, Toyota should do something to make the Hilux stand out.

As for the SC Diesel in a Hilux... I too would say highly unlikely. Maybe that rumour suffered some chinese whisper mix up with the SC petrol version.

Would you pay $10'000 more for the Hilux with a TT V8 TD? I would!!

absolutely, after lpg and an intercooler and chip with exhaust, there is the 10,000 well spent. Then again everyone here would probably chip and exhaust a v8 anyway.

I used to work on a boat that had Detroit diesel motors that were Supercharged AND Turbocharged.

I think that turbos suit diesel engines because diesels usually have good torque down low and run out of power up high. Turbos have poor low down torque and boost up high.

A marriage made in heaven.

Superchargers boost low to mid range torque - something diesels have lots of.

Not so useful.
I have nothing good to say down here so I wont say anything at all

The current VW golf comes in a twin charge guise. It has a supercharger that is specifically made for low down revs. As the revs rise the turbo spools up and when it comes to full power the supercharger cuts out and the turbo cuts in, both via a clutch. This technology is only available on petrol models in Aus, but in Europe, theyve got it on a diesel. VWs excuse is that we cant support a large range of vehicles in Aus.

Bet you dont know who developed this technology in the 80s. Yep, Toyota. It was too expensive at the time to put into production but their racing cars had twin charger engines in Japanese spec competitions.

I got all this from a mechanic mate of mine. Feel free to argue if you know it isnt right.

GHG,

I would not hesitate to put a exhaust, chip and LPG on the V8 TT TD. I'd look to upgrade the intercooler as well... but thats just me. If it helped I'd high flow the turbo's too!

Always on the hunt for more grunt!!

All that grunt in a Hilux... pointless. I would lose my licence... again!!

I wonder what one of those new motors are worth??

$18,000 i reckon. I can't wait to throw the book at my engine, just clearing the funds from the sale of Kidney.

As far as i'm aware, there twin turbo V8 that is in the 200 & 70 series, won't find under the bonnet. They had to widen the track of the 70 to squeeze it in. We could only dream boys!

Redbeard is correct. Toyota experimented with twin charging the 4AG-E engines in the 80's, thus becoming the 4AGZE I beleive. Only a limited run of these actually occured.

Original 4AGE's had 100kW out of the twin cam 1.6 engines, which were so good that the corolla's they were in were beating everything in the 2.0 to 3.0 litre classes at Bathurst.

And these were exactly the same as the stock engines you could buy in the corollas, revving out to almost 8grand.

Anyway, the twin chargin, from memory occured because they wanted more low down torque from the engine, whilst also benefiting from the turbo up high. The Supercharger would provide boost upto I think bout 2grand, when with a puff and a whistle the turbo would takeover and rev her out.

Here is a link on this particular motor-
http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/lane/1231/twincharging.html

was good for about 300horsepower!!

Wade, correct about the ttV8 not fitting, the landcruiser chassis rails were widened.

What I'd like to see is toyota replace the 4.0 V6 with a revise version of the 4.0 Lexus V8!!!!

8-)

Oilers for Ever!!

This is my first diesel and other than buying a Porsche or Ferrari etc I would never go back to a petrol motor in any vehicle.

A mate has a new Golf 1.9 TD it flies, and is really nice to drive. Another mate has just taken possession of a BMW 5 series 3.0L TD and he reckons it is the best car he has ever driven.

Don't get me wrong a nice petrol V8 is a beautiful thing, but I am a common rail convert. Old diesels ain't much chop, but these new motors are such a step up in power and refinement. My mates 4.0L V6 Hilux is all well and good, but with LPG and chip and exhaust my truck is so much better, and I spend 40-50% less on fuel.

Too bad about the chassis rails for the V8 TD... there goes that idea!!

Easy, make a wide track hilux. Strange how similar the lux is to the 120 prado yet its about 45mm or so narrower. If that engine ever goes into a prado in a few years, we know we are in with a shot. Pity toyota doesn't go down the PSA euro models with piezo CRD injection. Those new engines are getting serious kws out of smaller capacity then the tojo's. Look at the planned 3.5 twin turbo v6 nissan diesel with claimed 205kw and 500+ torque

TOMUCH,
As with anything Rover / Jaguar, if it isn't leaking oil its out of oil. And considering the fortune/misfortune of these 2 companies of late, I wouldnt go near them with a stick. I wil stick with Japanese reliability thanks.

Redbeard, couldnt agree with you more.. I work on Land Rovers for a living.... wonder why I dont own one...lol, but just think if Toyo did put a V6 Turbo Diesel in the lux, I mean they put a Petrol V6 in it..... why not a diesel...think of the possibilities, Come to think of it, why isnt there a V6 Turbo Diesel Dual cab available anywhre in Australia????
