31" tyres

Postby WTF on Fri, 25 Jan 2008 10:45 +0000

My Cooper ST's when new touch on the plastic guard at the rear of the arch, but only on the corner of the tread, light touch at certain steering angle with suspension compressed. I find it mainly when I reverse out of my driveway (at a litlle pace) to go right down the road. And this is with approx 38mm of lift in a 10/07 dual cab.

Troyco, I am also interested in your comment of moving a notch.

Cheers
Rob.

31" tyres

Postby Skog07 on Fri, 25 Jan 2008 12:14 +0000

Hi Hampo.
Hiruxhijinx and I talked about this in a previous topic "wheels and tyres" on the previous page. In NSW you can vary wheel diametre by 18mm which makes the 31's legal. But in QLD it is only 15mm which means 31's are illegal. I could be wrong but was told that 31's are ok by the "sales technician"?. My 31's BFG A/t's have about 10mm clearance from the front OME shocks and have had no rubbing issues. The 31's have been through all the mods as these were the first items fitted. Followed by bar, winch for a few months which lower the front end by 30 mm, then the Ome lift which reset it bact to 45mm up from std. Which lifted it in total 75mm from its most lowest point. You have the SR5 so you won't have the problem with flared guards. You can use the 15 x 7 alloys for the job. The rubber isn't worth that much so its probably best to ebay it or keep it in the shed incase you get a defect notice. Refit the originals to clear it then remove them again for around $90 bucks. Good to hear the S/t's worked out for you hiruxhijinx. Did you flare the guards?.
PS.On the talk of tyres make sure that the tyres that you fit are light truck tyres as they are stronger than standard tyre fitted, The lux has the strongest sidewalls at Six ply as all other in the class only have 4 but LT have 10.

31" tyres

Postby 9W6VX on Fri, 25 Jan 2008 1:21 +0000

Skog07,

If I am not mistaken, Load Range C is 6 ply, D is 8 ply and E is 10 ply rating.

LT (light truck) construction is better than those tyres with P (passenger) construction in terms of sidewall protection.

I had BFG M/T on my Toyota Bundera with 235/85R16 sizing. The load range was E. Bloody rough ride with 10 ply tyres.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Cheers

Hi Brendon.
Just checked the cheese cutters that came off the lux. There rating is 205R16C 8ply. 110/108S. I will have to look up in the tyre guide. My first comment was incorrect with being fitted with 6ply. But they are the heaviest rated in its class as all other makes are fitted with 6ply.
The LT give a good ride when the vehicle is loaded up. And I run around on the road with 40psi in them.
The biggest difference I noticed was after the suspension was fitted the vehicle responded better to sharp bumps and didnt shudder like it did with the original springs and shocks. However if the vehicle is m/t and the pressures are high and you hit a bumpy/ fast section of road it does fell like you are sitting on a jack hammer. I find if you bring the pressures down to around 18psi it rides well. I havent needed to go lower than this yet.

I was looking around to try and find the legislation on tyre/wheel and suspension modifications and found the document below.

Might be of interest to those in QLD.

It also states what Mark(Skog07) said that QLD only allows a +15mm increase in wheel diameter.

On talking with our fleet company, i was told that there have been instances lately where vehicles fitted with non standard and non compliant equipment have had their insurance claims rejected, based on the fact it is a requirement that the vehicle complies with local laws. Not sure how true, but food for thought.

Tyres on Hilux

Postby Bryan Webber on Tue, 29 Jan 2008 12:18 +0000

I got a set of 31' Cooper STT's and 265/75R16's. Will I need a lift for either of these? And what effect do the 31" have on fuel consumption and power?

Thanks in advance.

Lift will not be necessary. (I drive with 32 on stock height and no rubbing at all)

And fuel consumption will increase with 0.5liter/100km. (32")

Tyres on Hilux

Postby Rich on Wed, 30 Jan 2008 6:35 +0000

31" tyres killed my economy, it went from about 9.5 to around 11 l / 100KM. That is with the auto transmission. Manuals would not be as bad.

Some of that is due to the difference in distance travelled though.

Tyres on Hilux

Postby Hilux Max on Wed, 30 Jan 2008 6:56 +0000

Rich, I get 11 per 100km on 33's and mines a d4d auto aswell!

I reckon with 31's she'd fly.......LOL

I found a good size tyre Im going to try and get next time round, but will need to change my wheel offset that little bit more, might get a +10 offset alloy instead of the zero offset steel I got now, just to pull it that little bit more away from that darn body mount, and reduce a little bit more weight.

Its the Interco SSR Series and in 285/75x16 they are an actual 33.9/11.4x16

Yes, I will have to regear for them, heres a link to them-

Gday guys, just bought a 2006 SR dual cab tray. Unmodified apart from the factory front bar. What size tyres can I go on the steel 16in rims without a lift kit? Or should I try to get a set of SR5 alloys? I really only plan to do limited off road, mainly beech work.
Also found this tyre camparo for AT's http://www.4wdmonthly.com.au/tips_tyres.php

I got Dick Cepeck 31" x 10.5 tyres from Mickey Thompson. Cooper ST's I had bad reports and the STTs were too aggressive for daily driver and BFG's were unavailable for a month or so. Happy so far. quiet on road, still got some good sized lugs for grip of road, but still not got 1000 km on my SR!

Dump the standard 16" rims, my Suzuki came with them as standard! They are a very limiting size as the rim is so narrow.

Tyres are a personal choice depending on experiences of you and mates. I for one am very happy with my cooper STs and this is my fourth set over the last three hiluxes. A vast majority of my driving is on the black top around town as this is my company car, but when it goes off road I give it a bit of a flogging and have been heppy with the ST performance. Slate type rocks do cut the tread, especially around the edges, and they are only average in heavy mud (but when does it rain, when I am busy so no mud for me). Good on the beach and gravel and normal rocky terrain.

I have heard varying stories on cooper ST's, BFGs, and Mickey Ts. So as you get opinions, remember to ask what type of driving and on what road conditions so the information can be more readily compared with your own situation.

Hope that helps
Rob.

With standard suspension, the largest would be the 31x10.5x15.

The 32x11.5x15's will have issues at the front end.
