That's interesting. I have been informed by two seperate Toyota dealers that these filters are designed and intended to be changed only when the filter restriction light indicates either a restriction or water in the filter element, and that it is not unreasonable to expect 50-60 0000km from one element. I personally have installed a 1 micron filter between the original and the pump for added peace of mind, but haven't touched my filter since I found this out, about 30 000km ago. Have a look in your service manual and you won't find "replace fuel filter element" in there anywhere for a diesel.
