As far as I understand , if it doesn't scrub when articulating , then it shouldn't matter - you should be able to drive at standard height . Am I missing something ?
At standard height your front struts are stock height....they wont articulate/travel the same distance as a lifted hilux will because the lifted hilux has longer strut fitted.
Most lifted suspensions are stiffer and wont allow the suspension to compress as much as a standard hilux suspension will...this helps in keeping the 33" tyres off the guards.
If they do compress alot, then the 33" tyre will hit the flare on full compression. And most likely depending on the tyre will clip the bodymount with the wheels turned....
Ther is no point in making 33" tyres fit for only driving on the street and the wheel in the straight ahead position. If your gonna fit 33" tyres, you have to make sure that there is clearance from everywhere with the wheels turned and the front suspension fully compressed at the same time.
I have some good reading posted up regarding tyre clearances and suspension travel in my
Swaybar removal Thread linked here -->
http://www.newhilux.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=2971&hilit=sway+bar+removalHere are some pics from it to help me explain this better....
Full suspension compression I refer to is when the lower control arm contacts the bump stop....not when the coilover cant compress anymore because its very stiff....
With the swaybar removed and the lower control arm in the position above this is how the tyre was sitting fully compressed in the guard -
And with the wheels turned in the following position -
The outer lugz of the tyre were contacting the bodymount -
Nothing mind you that trimming the bodymount cant fix, but even then it doesn avoid the fact that your tyre will hit the guard if you go over a smooth rise in the road that drops off suddenly, causing you to hit the guard with your tyre.
NOTE: Let me also mention here to those reading that removing the sway bar is not only technically illegal but it does also give you a good 1.5 " or so more uptravel.
I did this just to explain a worst case scenario.
An extra benefit of the swaybar being installed is that it also limits uptravel slightly which helps with bigger tyre.....
I fitted a 6mm thick wahser under the bumpstop which limits uptravel by double that, so 12mm.
This was enough to keep the tyre off the guard under full compression as you can see the pics below as I put the hilux in the same position to compress the front end fully -
6mm spacer fitted -
Lower control arm on the bump stop with 6mm spacer fitted -
Position of tyre against the body mount now after spacer fitted -
Position of tyre in the guard after spacer fitted with full compression -
I hope that helps understand things abit more....if you do manage to fit 285's on standard suspension you will get both less up and down travel due to the size of the factory strut. which means you will also lift wheel off the ground more, and factory suspension being softer, will not only wear ouit quicker(sagg) but you'll have more chance of the tyre hitting the guard on a hard landing causing damage.
With the right offset wheel, all the necessary trimming including the bodymount and not having flares, I honestly beleive you could successfully run a 34/10.5x16 tyre......there is "just" enough room to do this for thise adventurous enough.
