2TR-FE 2.7 litre petrol engine

Postby 9W6VX on Wed, 14 Mar 2012 10:10 +0000

Guys,

Looking at getting a Toyota Fortuner for the handbrake as we sold our Toyota Innova MPV.

Unfortunately the petrol version only comes with the 2.7 litre 4 cylinder naturally aspirated 2TR-FE.
Wish it had the 3.4 V6 5VZ-FE though.
I have driven a Prado 120 with the 4 litre V6 1GR-FE with a 5 speed automatic and I like the performance.

How's the 2TR-FE 2.7 engine for performance in stock standard form?
Toyota's specs states 118KW/5200 rpm and torque at 240NM/3800rpm.

The diesel version only comes with the 2.5 D4D 2KD-FTV. So that strikes it out as if it is diesel I would prefer a 3 litre 1KD-FTV.

I can't seem to find much information about the 2.7 litre 2TR-FE.

Since the Hilux 4x2 also uses this 2TR-FE engine, I would appreciate any information about it's performance, reliability issues, fuel consumption etc.

Thanks
Cheers

Brendon

I own the previous model of 2.7 in my 1998 4x4 dual cab hilux. A different engine but similar outputs.
I goes ok, doesnt drink too bad for a petrol (12-13l/100 with a fair amount of junk bolted on and hills involved) but is no rocket ship.

Thanks for the reply Fuzzy.

Paid the booking fee already for a Fortuner which is in the same class as Prado. Full time 4WD with 2TR-FE engine.

But is is underspecced for its price and the only real competition was the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport or what you would call a Challenger.

I did not look at the Korean brands even though they were cheaper and came with full specs such as traction control, hill descent control, brake assist, vehicle stability control, 4 wheel disc brakes, side curtain airbags etc.....
Cheers

2TR is the VVT version of the 3RZ engine. From what ive read the bottom ends are the same.

the 3rz was not far behind the 5vz in power and torque, the less weight of the 3rz helped the vehicle as did better fuel economy.

in straight line acceleration there wasnt much in between the two engines.

2TR is a good engine with a proven heritage.

2TR-FE 2.7 litre petrol engine

It is odd how Toyota chooses the motor options for countries. Our luxes only come in diesel and I think it is the same with the fortuner only comes in the 3.0L. A shame they don't give you guys that option or us the option of petrol.
