Want to replace LN106 with latest available 3lTD engine????

Postby Marto on Thu, 13 Jan 2011 12:56 +0000

I want to replace my 93/4? hilux 2.8Dsl with a 3lTD engine.

Can it be done without much fuss, and what is the latest engine I could buy / get / install that would match the cars current setup without need to change to much.

And if not a 3lt, then a recond 2.8TD?? I want to remain with a 4 cylinder for rego and fuel consumption reasons.

Cheers,

Marto.

I have seen LN106 standard 3L engine (NA, 2.8 diesel) replaced with 1KZ-TE (turbo 3.0 diesel).

I think that would be your engine of choice if you want to stick with diesel.

yep, I agree with Brendan...go a 1KZ engine.

I'd also reccomend trying to find an early 1KZ from an imported SURF as they didnt have the electronic injector pump on them and will mean less lectrics to fiddle around with when installing.

There are heaps of places/people in brisbane willing to help.....try contacting Buddy from Budscustoms...he may be able to help out.

Thanks all for the advice. Am i doing the right thing given that I want to stay with a diesel. The current engine has done 500,000km. To old to add a turbo to? I want to be able to tow my pop top caravan on sand with no issues....

Rebuild and turbo / intercool it for about the same cost as a swap over but have an engine that will last at least another 250,000kms. This way here you know the motor you have is good, as the motor you install may be a pile of crap and give you nothing but trouble.

My thoughts would be stay with what you have rebuild and turbo it.

I had a turbo on my former LN106. It was a toyota turbo off some Toyota engine. Common mod here in Sabah. It mad a lot of difference in power and torque but made the engine run a lot hotter. The other popular mod as stated is the 1KZ 3 liter turbo diesel.

So without causing any arguements, what appears to be the end verdict.

Do I recond the current engine and add a turbo, or go for the 1KZ.

I have emailed Budcustoms and await a reply. Thanks again for all the advice to date.

If you are looking for a performance improvement, the 1KZ-T would be better over the 3L.

The 3L is naturally aspirated in standard and if you opt to turbo & intercool it, I don't think the performance would be as good as the 1KZ-T.

That's my 2 cents anyway.....

Where to find a 1KZ-TE (turbo 3.0 diesel).
New to the scene and I have no contacts as yet.

And if located, how long would I be without the old girl for while the change happens.

If you don't mind freighting one from Melbourne then try Just Toyota in Moorabbin. They also own Vic 4wd wreckers and have heaps of 1kz motors. Don't go for the engine out of the Surf though it will most likely end up in tears

They are exactly the same engine, and which Surf are you referring to KZN130, KZN185, etc. ??

How did you go fitting the 1kz-te engine? Did you use the original ln106 gear box behind the 1kz-te? As I am currently in the same boat looking to fit a 1kz-te out of a surf kzn130 to my single cab hilux ln106 as my current 3l engine has now gave way...

I am buying a 1kzte prado early 03 model this week
to put into a 96 ln106
A few headaches with the electrics but I am buying a complete car to transfer everything I need... intercooled already and made for the turbo... I believe anything before a 150 series late 03 model will fit into a lux... Biggest mod I will have to make is gearbox and radiator... Will be some custom made parts in there also.. I'll keep you updated.
