TRD Build up NEW pics added page 2

Postby simonreale on Wed, 11 Mar 2009 7:43 +0000

Well, after much debate have decided against the D4D hilux and have decided to take a TRD instead. Simply due to not being satisfied with the go in the diesel, even if it was chipped and I wasnt happy with the 4 speed auto as I do mostly highway driving.

Ordered today, should take delivery in 2 weeks. I will keep this thread as my question/build thread so I dont clutter up the forum with new topics.

I plan on upgrading front springs to King Springs, same as my last hilux. How ever, ive got a question for
anyone that might know. TRD is lower then standard hilux? I want to lift it like we do with the normal
SR5's

Do I need the exact same spring as on my old SR5? To get a 2.5" lift? Do I need to modify the bilstein strut?

Also, I plan on changing rims and tyres. I will be keeping my TRD rims and fitting some 32" STT's for
the fun times, but I need a allround touring/beach driving rim and tyre that will spend most its time on
the car. Last set up I had 18" with 285x60R18 Coopers HT Plus which performed great.

How ever, this time, I was thinking I wanted more rubber, but still keeping the 285 width if I could. I dont want tyres that are over 810? in rolling diameter as this will weigh too much and drain the fuel, was thinking a 17" 285? Anyone know any that will do the job? Mickey T ATZ's seem to be alright, just cant decide on size.

Now, as for rims, the car is silver and I want a black or Gunmetal coloured rim. Anyone know of any that look good?

Exhaust- Im getting pacemakers with hi flow cats into a lukey - Full 2.5" Stainless steel system. Does anyone know if they modified the standard V6 Exhaust or is it still the same?

Anyway, enough for now

I thought they stopped making the TRD. Why would you want to modify the exhaust? I thought the idea of the TRD was the go fast mods were done by TRD so you did not have to do them yourself. I dont think the Bilsteins have the extra grooves in them like most after market ones that everyone uses but I may be wrong as I havnt seen them out of the truck. Sounds like you would be better of getting a SR5 V6 auto and jazzing it up to your own specs, probably cheaper too unless they are giving the TRDs away as not many sold at the rrp. Good luck

There are heaps of TRD's sitting around waiting to be sold...there are good deals to be had if you can bargain with the dealer well.

Simon, congrats on your purchase.....yes, the TRD is lower, but the suspension that fits a SR5 to give it 2.5" lift will be fine on your TRD.

If you want to fit 285's to it, you will need another offset wheel other than factory TRD rims as the tyres width will contact the edge of the upper control arm.

I agree, if I had a TRD, I would be doing an exhaust upgrade as one of the first things to it.

The exhaust on the TRD is the same as stock....there really isnt too much different other than slapping on the supercharger, small intercooler and I beleive a water cooler at the front for the supercharger or something along those lines.

Micket Thompson has a black mag I beleive or get a set of American Racing Rims, they have heaps of options.

good luck.

Hi gents, I'm rarely on here, (being a lowly Mk5 owner), but have been looking for signs of somebody giving the TRD the treatment it deserves, as it will be my next project car I think. Love to see pics when you get them Simon, and the black D/Cepeks would look awesome, (though I'm bias,) I guess you'd need 17's to clear the front calipers? MMaaxx will know the answer as I think he's already played with one of these machines.

yes, the trd comes with 17" wheels as the calipers are the standard Prado calipers....that said, there is one brand of steel wheel (sunraysia style) that clears the Prado calipers as I know somebody that had them on his current shape prado.

so if you wanted to, you could run 285/75x16's with abit of lift.

bigger tyres regardless which way you go is a must on them as they are very tail happy especially in the wet.

My plan would be to install a Snake racing 4" lift kit with lift shackles and stick MTZ 33/12.50R17LT's on it with Black DC1's. I'm sure a small body lift may be necessary for decent clearance and W/spacers. Would try to get hold of some bigger arches from SVS UK, (or find out where he gets them, Thailand I presume). But I've been keepin eye out to see if anyone has played with one yet...

I had the SR5 V6- an 07 model, and by the time I finished all the upgrades, it would work out much more expensive then the TRD.

Leather upgrade alone is $5000, Super charger $10,000, Suspension $2000+ and you loose your warranty the minute you
bolt on a supercharger.

Ive seen those MT rims before and am seriously considering them. I know how bad the V6's alone are in the rain, so thats why I want a wide tyre.

Thanks guys

Pick the new hilux up today, and im just wondeing, no one has been able to tell me, does the TRD have standard hilux size shocks and springs? I want to do the 2" lift just by fitting longer springs like my last one
and im not sure If i can do it with the shocks that are currently on it?

Also,

do 265x65r17 Tyres fit under a standard hilux?

I believe they use the Bilstein shocks that many other on here use. You can machine a groove into these to place the lower spring mount where you want it and thereby add lift. But upgrading the springs would be the way to go. You would not need to change the strut.
I have nothing good to say down here so I wont say anything at all

The TRuD Hilux has bilstein shocks but their suspension is set lower than a standard SR5, this is due to Toyota wanting to retain the same centre of gravity.

Just get 2" lifted springs to suit an SR5 and you'll be right.

265/65x17 do fit under a standard hilux... but will rub on the mud flap anywhere off the bitumen.

The grove is done in the factory when ordering... Just let them know what you want done... They have a fair idea anyway as most hilux owners have this mod done as standard.

So, I can send my shocks back? And get them machined at the factory? Where abouts are they located? Can I contact anyone regarding this?

contact paul at sydney shock absorbers, he helped toyota develop the suspension on the trd hilux. I wanted to put bilsteins on my hilux a couple of years ago but wanted to see what the ride was like before committing. Rang sydney shock absorbers & they told me to come on down & have a drive of their ute. Got talking to paul (nice bloke & knowledgeable ),he told me they set the valve spec for the shocks for the hilux (& probably other cars) & was at the time working with toyota on the suspension for the TRD. From memory the valving on the TRD shocks were different to what joe public buys for the hilux. The ph no is 02 95575930 I have no affiliation with them, i was just impressed with their service & knowledge

I have been running 265 stts on my diesel now for 2 years with a chip exhaust and the rest. They are woeful under steering in the wet or even taking off on even the slightest of hills or corners. I would suggest against the stt's unless it was for off road. With a supercharged trd they spin the wheels in the dry with a road tire :) go the mickey thompson atz's, a great comprimise for on and off road and look good too.
