First oil change

Postby Homer on Tue, 04 Dec 2007 10:24 +0000

Hi, my recently acquired Hilux is scheduled for 1000km service. When I made a booking I was told that this “service” involves basically nothing more but visual inspection. Apparently the original oil is a “special run-in” oil and it should be left until the first oil change at 10,000km. I would appreciate some informed comments as I intend to change oil every 5,000km and I was under impression that 1000km service should also involve oil change.
Thanks

Im with you mate, Get hold of the "run In Oil" if that's what they recommend and change it at 1000 & 5000 then use your choice after that, at a minimum change the filter any way, Macca

Done ours at 2200 miles (say 3500km) with filter and you know what engine immediately quieter.

Rechecked the handbook and toyo say oil change due at 9000 miles!!

Will do another before she goes in for first service at 9000 and therafter plan to do 1 between dealer services.

Is that right about special running in oil?

I bought the 10/40 semi synthetic from toyo dealer, wanted to make sure they got no probs with it if anything goes wrong under warranty.

The D4D has hit 5,000 km so taking advice from others on this forum we decided to change the oil and filter. Slight problem no matter how hard we tried, could not get the factory oil filter off! Me 50 ish and my son 22 neither of us strong enough and we lost a bit of skin trying. Tried using an old bicycle tube to give extra grip... still no good. Anyway after a bit of stuffing around we drilled a hole in the bottom of an old plastic mug, cut the handle off and with washers and nuts, installed a 20 cm long bolt sticking out the bottom. The mug fitted nicely over the filter with the bicycle tube still in place for cushioning. Twisted the whole show with a socket spanner on the bolt head and the filter came off nicely. We did not over-tighten the replacement filter, so hopefully we won't have to use our "special tool" again ...... for oil we used Valvoline Super Diesel 15W-40 same as local Toyota dealer

Hi guys, I was over at Oldmac Springwood where I bought my rig the other day. Just about to hit 15,000 km on my rig. At parts the guy said change the oil every 5,000 km on the diesel and then I dropped in at service 'cos I'm starting to get lazy now I'm over 50 and asked them how much. They had a standard service on their computer which included new filter and oil change and a full check over for $171.00, takes them one hour. Had a think about it and I drive about 20,000 km per year, so I decided that for an extra $340 a year, they might as well do it as it is cheap insurance!

Also sorted out radiator hoses and fan belt to toss in the back as spares. I was pleasantly surprised. Hoses $31 each and Fan belt $41. Thought that was very cheap!

Oldmac service open 7:00am and are also open Thursday nights, so I'll drop in for a while you wait service shortly, settle into their lounge, fire up my laptop and hook up to their wireless network and check out this forum while I wait!

Totally agree Tunnel Rat,I did the same.I also change fuel filter every 10,000(Even the Toyota filters are cheap compared to getting muck or water into the common rail system) :) :) :)

Why do an oil change every 5000k?

Whats are the benefits apart from propping up oil companys profits.

What oil do you use?

I think some of yous are over maintaining your Hilux a bit!

Richard, I think it depends how long you want to keep your rig for. I am planning on 10 years plus, so keen to keep the motor in tip top condition. Previously never been a fan of overservicing either, but in this instance, I think it is justified.

STRADDLER

Save youself the hassle next time by buying a filter wrench that has a nylon strap with a handle that attaches to a socket, very easy to use and costs about $25 from Repco.

If the vehicle is getting used for extreme conditions yes 5000k is good but if you are only using it as a normal vehicle 10000k is still a conservative amount.

Remember when Toyota does there testing they would make sure there engine is not going to have damage caused if driven very hard for 10000k with out an oil change, if they did have doubts they would lower the service intervals.

They would also ensure no damage was caused if the engine went over 10000k for a service.

Nor do they want there engines failing in 10 years time either.

Oil companys would not produce an oil that has short replacement intervals as it is bad advertising for there brand.

Speak to a rep of an oil company and they will tell you there oil is better then brand X because brand X is only good for so many K's and there's will do more k's before changing.

There is no benefits under normal conditions to service them ever 5000k....if it makes you feel good and you think you are doing the right thing keep doing it.

Have a look at alot of the stuff coming out of Europe with 30000k plus service intervals.

What about trucks 80000 o 100000k intervals.

Good quality oils as used in Hilux's will probably be fine at 20000k or more before it starts to loose it's properties.

New CRD engines run a lot cleaner then the old dinosaurs of yesterday even when extra diesel is pumped into the engine to help burn of the junk in the particle filter.

If your so concerned about keeping your engine in tip top condition and you want to do it right get the oil sampled and then work out you service intervals from that, they can even tell you what is wearing and when it will be an issue or if it's over fueling or if coolant is leaking into the engine.

Good info Richard, I know that with the big diesels, they test the oil and only change it if necessary, it might be interesting to do the same to one of our rigs. Certainly clear the air about this. However, in the back of my mind, I know that all Toyota cares about is getting these things out of warranty becasue after that, there is no skin off their nose. Maybe I am too cynical these days...

I go to spare parts at Hitachi, Cat or Komatsu, and get a oil sample kit witch includes the cost of the testing and post
