DODGY INJECTORS

Postby oldrev on Mon, 18 May 2009 3:59 +0000

well after 108000 kms i think i have a crook injector.
well i know it actually .
the problem is mainly when engine is cold but not always
it runs rought at idle and after i get it up in the revs a bit not so noticable
when it was playing games this afternoon at idle cold i popped the lid and felt each injector line and its number 3
main culprit anyhow
after 10 k's driving no noticable difference in the pulse feel in the line
i then rang the toyota dealer from who i bought the truck and he reckons even though its outta warranty he thinks i have a case as he says there is an issue with injectors.
anyhow i'll get it into then asap to assess the show cos i told them i'm not a happy camper and he agreed
see where we go with this one because a faulty injector can burn a hole in a piston and i dont need that.
this dealer has had such a thing happen with a hilux motor about 12 months ago
new engine blah blah blah
i will keep you up to speed after i get a verdict

Ken,
A good way to determine it's number 3 injector is to disconnect each injector plug while it's running rough. This will just help you determine for sure which on it is.
Hope this helps.

Shane

well had the dealer put the diagnostic machine on my truck this morning and it is in fact number 2 which is the problem.
but he said there is another one not right as well.
they are going to see if they can get it through as a warranty claim since its not far out and they are waiting on two other injector jobs on prado's as well
just gotta wait now for answer

Oldrev would you be able to find out what they would be worth to replace if it was coming out of your pocket ?.

The guy that I baught my Hilux from had all his injectors changed at 15,000kms. He did not want to go back to genuine ones and pushed the point and toyota australia approved non genuine injectors to be used. The hilux now has 67,000kms and no issues beside the cold rattles

i took the truck in on monday as planned
i'm driving a camry loan car @ the moment
spoke to service head this morning 2 injectors bad
apparently what happens is when 1 or 2 play up the other one try and compensate hence the huge fuel consumtion travelling 60 kms to grafton
i might get it back to drive on friday at this stage but i doubt if it will be fixed then
its taking a long time because of the fact its out of warranty he has to go through all the channels
he and myself are hoping on a good outcome to this
i haven't named the dealer but they are having a go for me which is a rare thing in today's world .
i did say jokingly this morning if it fails throw some more diesel on it and throw a match in it
he just laughed
fair dinkum good guy to talk to
we will see what happens i suppose

the saga continues.
i got told today that they wont warrant the injectors because i have a black sludge in the strainer in the fuel tank.
they are saying that dirty fuel no warranty
NOT HAPPY JAN
so i then rang the denso agent in lismore to get some explainations for what i was told
the black sludge is a fungis(i already know that)
the use of most diesel additives is useless (may as well throw it over ur shoulder i was told including genuine stuff)
the filter should catch the foreign particles but suspended water in diesel goes straight to the pump and injectors
it appears talking to him that its this minute water particles is what stuffs the show
in the next breath we discuss the fact that there is absolutly nothing i could do to stop this happening .
he is getting a price on exchange units out of melbourne forthe dealer since genuine replacements are out of my ball park.
i had a discussion with the service manager @ toyota grafton good bloke .
but i said to him that if i had my time over again i'd had extended warranty or trade b4 it runs out
i wont actually say what he said lol
my vehicle is with toyota finance i thought about telling them to come and get the thing but then i setled down abit .
if they can say that you have dirty fuel i seems you dont have a leg to stand on its in our books in black and white.
the denso agent told me of a product made in oz that the fuel companiees use that will kill the algea in the tank yeha!
i will buy some when i get round to it
just gotta wait now to see what the quote price is
and yes i'm having a bloody beer or two
i have been so carefull with my fuel its beyond me

Oh.... sucks mate.

Please share with us the product you mentioned which kills algae in the tank.

This is one issue about the D4D common rail engines that always comes up...............

And the bloody part is that whether it is Toyota Australia or Malaysia, they will never come to the party!

well here we go!!
the dealer who is Black Toyota in Grafton NSW has not had any luck getting any compensation out of Toyota Australia
as they are blaming my fuel as the cause for the injector failure.
i rang toyota myself and was told the dealer had to put an appeal in on my behalf which they have already and was refused.
i then imformed the girl at toyota that there was such a thing as statutory warranty on goods that breakdown or develop
a fault within an unreasonable time i have a right to negotiate.
i then rang fair trading told them the story and proceeded to lodge an online complaint against toyota.
i have a case because of other vehicles having had injectors replaced under warranty and also the fact that they have produce a new improved replacement injector which is clearly stated on my account.
quote:
DIAGNOSE KNOCKING NOISE IN ENGINE $454.54
checked out why engine has knock when cold.
found injectorsto be way out of specification
replaced all 4 injectors and remapped ecu.
new injectors are the latest model.
cleaned out fuel tank strainer and pick bowl sent sample to toyota as requested.
injector 4 $2090.92
gasket fuel suction 1 3.83
retainer fuel pump 1 77.40
gasket HF05 5 45.45
gasket nozzle holder 4 13.88
gasket cylinder 1 24.08
seal head bolt 4 13.52
--2269.08

2723.62
gst 272.36
------------
$2996.00
i have told the head service guy to expect a phone call from fair trading he is cool with that
so i will see what happens from here
nearly time for a beer

Guys,

This may sound a bit dodgy and could be impractical but for future reference; If you think your injectors are dodgy, remove the tank and flush it clean and filter the fuel going back into the tank before going to Toyota . They then can't blame the fuel being dirty as you will have cleaned out the tank and filtered the fuel.

G'day Ken
Don't give up on it i had No. 2 injector replaced about 6 weeks ago then a week later got the nice death rattle back.
So back to the dealer i go and No.2 injector goooone again and also No.3 goooone aswell and now the dealer is still waiting for an answer and approval from toyota to fix it again.

Starting to give me the shits.

Got a steinbauer ready to go in but waiting for the fix.

You've got me worried now as my Hilux will probably never see a diagnostic machine after I get it home.

Are any of you guys that have had injector failures running any aftermarket fuel filtration or watertraps?
