D4D Rattle

Whats the out come so far regarding this so called "death knock" that some people were referring to.

This forum and many others have gone quiet...has every one found out that it's normal or is Toyota paying them to keep quiet!

One member had an oil sample analysed...what was the outcome of that.

It's strange how there was so much hoohaa for a few months then it stopped.

Sooooo is there a problem or not?

Hi olcoolone
I have just posted to another forum I had a Toyota guy come to the dealer and flash the computer and that has reduced the rattle to about 1/4 of what it was.
You should give your dealer a call and see if they can arrange to have the computer flashed with new update.
Lux still rattles but not as loud but it will go a little longer.
hope this helps Regards Glenn

I second the above comments.....I spoke to some contacts and they have said that dealers have been told that if any hilux diesel customer comes in complaining about the knocking, they will re-program or update the programming of the ECU to minimise this.

so if anyone wants it done, go ask your local dealer, as there hasnt and wont be a recall over it, just on a case by case basis.

I fitted a DP Chip and the rattle appeared just like that. Its from the extra fuel pressure i believe. Has anyone else seen the same thing happen after fitting a chip? Its usually only noticable when you first start up a cold motor, but it sounds not very nice at all. After it warms up a bit it settles down.

Have you tried removing the chip and seeing if the noise is still there.

My brother in law is a diesel fitter in NZ. He was telling me the other night that aparently it is due to an injector issue that Toyota is staying quiet about. He was saying that it is happening to alot of D4D's in NZ aswell and if you take it to the dealer before warranty is up they should replace the injectors under warranty. It should only effect pre 08 models.

Has any one else heard anything like this?
Or am i being stitched by my inlaws???
Dude I can so make that. If I don't ....... Bury the spare, I'll winch it!

Got my old man to ring around toyota dealers re: the ECU update for rattly engines..

he was told that there is no updates at all for the hilux only for landcruiser.. and they'd run the standard injector tests to make sure they were in spec (which hes already had done)..

he rang Toyota Dandenong & Toyota Nunawading..

is there something specific he should be asking for ?

You can extend the factory warranty at any time whilst the vehicle is still under the original factory warranty.

Our Hilux is 3 and a bit years old and we extended our warrant for another 3 years up to a maximum of 100,000 kilometers from new.

We plain to update it in 2010 when the new model comes out......Mmmmm can't wait 3.5lt. V6 turbo diesel with 151Kw and 470Nm....sorry only joking.

Got it back today, they were confused with the 200 series ecu upgrade and said they couldn't get an update for the Hilux.

Still noisy as hell, power loss, bad fuel economy and just simply pissed off. They said they couldn't test the injectors or fuel system and they seem to think it's going ok, maybe it's just me?

They had the car for two days as they stripped the axle studs somehow, got a new axle and axle studs so all rolling again now.. they also done up the gearbox seal on top, it was weeping a bit..

They advised me again that the shims need doing so I'll get that done next service...

Can't get warranty extended as I've almost hit 100,000kms.. I do allot of driving so it clocks over quick.. going to enquire about what motors can be put in the hood before I decide to sell.

My 05 Hilux has had this death rattle 4 or 5 times in the last few months mainly on cold mornings, but it has also happened when it's been in 30 degree tempretures. I have extended warranty, so I hope Toyota will fix this problem.

Sounds about right hiluxman... with a new injector or 2 plus any software upgrades they can apply it should come back in good nic.. will still clatter on cold days though...

Ive never had a problem with mine. 07 d4d auto......havent had these death rattles you guyus speak off.

Im wondering if maybe its caused by bad fuel where you guys fill up, in turn screwing the injectors?

just a theory.

Yeah my 06 SR5 was always good... got them to check it out when everyone was going of chops abiut it all. mine apparently where one of the best they'd seen with the tolerence right at the good end of the measure.

I always fill at the same servo used by many trucks, unless I really have to fill somewhere else.. mine was noisier in the colder mornings but nothing to stress overly about. 5 mins of driving it was all good.

Over the past couple of weeks i noticed the rattle from the engine when cold, would sit and wait 4-5 min to warm up and it was still there under load until temp guage read about 1/3, it sounded like a bad case of piston slap took it into toyota they had it overnight they have some new injectors on the way so hopefully will be fixed before easter

toyota changed an injector which was said to be faulty. has made alot of the noise go away. said there was bad diesel in the tank. but not sure if this was true. toyota adv there is still a knock or like a ping in the engine which they are not sure what is causing it. so they said after you've refueled acouple of times if its still making a noise take it back and they'll get a guy from toyota head office to come out and look at it. almost sounds like a bearing noise. the car is a 07 with 65000 on the clock.
