Bad Fuel

Postby TOMUCH on Thu, 27 Dec 2007 12:34 +0000

Well, what a start to the Holidays... I drove from Darwin to Mitchell (QLD) without a problem, then filled up at Mitchell... this is when my problems started... I had unknowingly filled up with a water diesel mix.. I got approx 50k out of town and my fuel light came on... I drained the water from the filter bowl, and had no choice but to keep going... it was Xmas day and nothing else was open. I made it to the next town ...Roma without incident. I then got 20 L of dieso and drove out of town to dump my contaminaded fuel... at $1.50 a liter, it was criminal to throw it away.. I flush the tank with a few liters then put the rest of the jerry in the tank... rest primed the filter, then headed back to Roma to fill up.. all was well.. then 20K short of Chinchilla, the car just stopped... as if I had turned off the ignition... I rolled to a stop and assessed the damage... I nice fella stopped and towed me into town to the local Toyota dealer (Black Toyota)... I called the after hours number and they came to my aid within 15mins... My hats off these guys...They gave up their Xmas afternoon to try and help me... It turned out the fuel supply pump was not producung any pressure.. gunna cost nearly $1000... for a new pump and fitting.. wont be ready till Friday... so there it is . let it be a warning to you all... I got my fuel from a caravan park ...instead of a fuel station.. it was the only place open... will never be doing that again... Take care and I hope your holidays had a better start than mine... Cheers TOMUCH

Very sorry to read your story, thanks for the heads up. The kids gave me some gerrys for Xmas. Looks like I will be using them a bit more than expected.

Would people be interested if i could organise a group discount on the sedimentor fuel filter from Kerry at Taipan XP. Last i checked they retail at $750 fitted so if i get 10 orders maybe i could bring thr price down and save on fitting if people want to DIY. Its not complicated but fiddly in tight spaces. It is the best insurance you can have on contaminated diesel and you will never have to worry about doing damage to the injectors.

If you spent 1k just on repairs, it this device would pay dividends for all of us. Let me know as im catching up with Kerry soon to get the filter and lpg.

We always try to fill up at truck stops and always carry 40lts in jerry cans just incase.

Has anyone tried fuel additive designed for water in diesel.

This issue scares me.
We are planning to do a desert crossing next June, Winter in the Simpson is not as life threatining as Summer but a problem like Mark had could have disasterous consequences.
Wouldn't mind some details about this filter, cost of course, but size and where it can be fitted.
I have no room left under the bonnet except in front of the radiator, or is it durable enough to live under the lux?
A previous thread had discussions if the OEM pump can handle pushing through another filter, info on that would be great.

Macca,

Good morning early bird! How many cups of coffee have you done this morning?

I'm also seriously disturbed by this. The previous thread which was quite long had no DEFINITIVE answer as to whether adding a secondary fuel filter would cause problem to the fuel pump due to pressure drop etc.

It looks like the primary fuel filter doesn't seem to be doing much in terms of water filtration as it still allows water in the diesel to enter the fuel pump. As you know, I change my fuel filter every 10k and they are dirty! It just shows what diesel crap we get here!

Cheers

Matt (10k),

Have you added a secondary fuel filter to your rig?

Do you have any new updates for us on this issue?

The suggestion by olcoolone is sound.

Is there any diesel additive that we can add in to the fuel tank upon every fill up that can break down the water etc.?

That way, we can arrest the problem of water contamination reaching the fuel filter and fuel pump.

I like this suggestion. If there are any members who know about such a additive, please do share it with us.

Thanks and I hope Mark's Hilux will be ready and he's on his way to his holidays.

Mark, do keep us posted and I really feel for you mate. I know how you feel. I would be really pissed if it happened to me.

Cheers

Hey Guys, I am in Brissy now... my Brother in Law came up and picked me up Tuesday Night... I just got a call from Black Toyota... They put in a warranty claim on my behalf...and it was approved... so I get the repaires done for free...well no additional cost to me anyway... $90 for a motel room I didnt use for the whole night and $100 in fuel for my Brother In Law to come get me... al up not a bad deal considering.. not to mentionthat the guys from Blacks are comming to BRissy tomorrow...and are gunna pick me up and take me back to Chinchilla... so I don have to organise my own transport back there... I tell you what. I have been so impressed by the professionalism and friendly service of these guys that I will be buying my next car from them... Even if I have to fly down from Darwin to do it... I really cant praise them enough... If the guys from Blacks Toyota Chinchilla ever read this... I would like to say thanks guys.. you are all champions in my book... Cheers TOMUCH
