Have you corrected the the distance travelled to take into account the bigger wheels?
On the internet you can be anything you want. It is strange that so many people choose to be stupid!

The original speedometer was never correct in the first place.
The original tyres are 29".

With the 31" tyres you are running now your speedometer should be reading more accurately.

If you have a GPS, check it out and compare the speed reading on the GPS viz a viz the speedometer.
Cheers

brendan is spot on...toyota scammed its customers by making them think the fuel economy was accurate with 29" tyres when it wasnt, they were underquoting....those with GPS's soon found out the truth....

how far out is the speedo with the standard tyre?
because i have noticed if you set the cruse control to 110 then reset your average speed on the trip computer it says your doing about 102km/h which one is right and why are they different?

D4D Fuel economy

Postby Toylux4 on Wed, 08 Jun 2011 10:47 +0000

Has anyone fitted gas kit to there D4D?

I fitted a D-gas kit my 2.8 Hilux with aftermarket Turbo and as well as giving me a noticeable power increase it also improves fuel economy

My Hilux has approx 10" lift and 35 x 12.5 x 15 tyres and has had the diff ratio's changed from 4.3's to 4.8's which according to my GPS puts my speedo back to being exactly right.

Now for the fuel figures with the Gas kit off I use 15 litres per 100 and when I flick the Magic switch it uses 12 litres per 100.

Oh and by the way I ' Drive it like I stole it '

My SR has stock wheels and tyres, speedo reads around 8 KMS/hr faster than actual at 100Kms/hr.
The published fuel consumption figures for all cars sold in Oz are derived by a Govt. dept. which does it's own testing, not Toyota or other manufacturers.

Well my 2009 DLX 2.5 D4d actual speed according to GPS is about 7 km less then then the indicated speed at 100 kmh with stock wheels. If I put larger tires on it will that make the speedo even more off? I currently have 205x75x16 and I am considering putting on 235x85x16 when I get new tires.

2007 SR Dual Cab, Stock Standard except for nudge bar and cruise.
I don't have the figures for a full tank distance but did a recent couple of trips with figures as follows.
1) Ute fully loaded with fridge and camping gear, 6x4 trailer with approx 900kg of ceramic tiles on a pallet. 220 kms took 22.3 litres to fill.
2) Ute only, this time with a load of furniture and the fridge, tail gate down. 220kms took 20.9 litres to fill.

I was amazed that towing with about a tonne on board had very little effect.

Speedo checked with GPS, about 5km out.
Sat the cruise on 105km in 5th most of the way.

Much better performance than the old 2.4 petrol hilux and a lot more comfortable. PS I love my cruise control.

Kev.

My very first tank of fuel in the hilux gave me the stated 9.1 litres / per 100km...I thought the gauge was broken at first as it took ages for the needle to move off the "FULL" position.

how times have changed...wish I could still have that fuel economy

Just to add my bit. I have a 07 SR5 dual cab auto diesel D4D with Coopers HT's. Fairly standard apart from front and sports bars. I also tow a 2 tonne caravan with it. The fuel consumption for a 2 tonne car is brilliant. Combined highway and city I get 10.2l per 100ks, on a highway run I get 8.6l per 100ks. I tend to drive a little like your grandma. With the van on the car is a standout. Totally loaded with canoe, bikes, 170 litres of water in the tanks and some spare jerries as well as the wife's hairdrier and the usual (I cant live without it) stuff, I regularly got 12.4 l per 100ks. It has power to burn and I often find it passing slower cars on the mountain slopes.

Have often spoken to other vanners who simply can't match this consumption. My last 4WD (6 cyl petrol) returned 18l per 100ks with the van on. I have had a lot of 4WD's over the years, but this is the best one I have ever owned. Plan to keep it into my dottage and will bury it in the coffin with me. Plus it has been great off road. Now I suppose I have to marry the thing.

Cheers all

Update. I have recently as of yesterday added a diesel fuel conditioner and had an awsome result althougth i have only done about 100ks I am now using 8.2 Lts per 100ks, which is where it use to be. As toyota has blamed the quality of diesel for my consumption issues, does anyone have any knowledge of a decrease in diesel quality? I'll update the fuel range once i have refuelled.
As for helpful hints from others I haven't calibrated the speedo as yet, I wanted to test it on a dyno first which I will try and do this week. Also someone mentioned about a 3"exhaust and a chip, what were the benefits with increased power and economy, as when the warranty runs out I plan on improving the power output.

Cheers everyone and have a great day.

Picked up my 07 Hilux last week and the fuel economy is awsom compared to my old 05. Both d4d manuals. My old one according to the gps was about empty around the 480-500 mark, it had 33's, bullbar, lift and tray. New one has nothing and according to the gps over the last two tanks I've got over 750kms and the light hasn't even come on! Be interesting to see what this one is like once all the mods have been added in the next week or two. I have a feeling the fuel economy won't be so good
