4inch lift in QLD, fget about it

Postby ArkEngel78 on Wed, 12 Sep 2007 10:30 +0000

For the last few weeks have been dreaming of an ultimate lift kit to put in my lux to give it some much desired height.

My walls came crashing down when it was pointed out to me that such a lift in the fair sunshine state of qld is utterly illegal. pretty much only a 2 inch suspension lift is permissable under the current law.

so adding a 4 inch lift kit on that basis could turn into a costly mistake. Are there any people savvy with the qld laws out there who might be able to have an idea how i can make my 4 inch lift happen legally ie perhaps alls needed is an engineers certificate? or perhaps QLD transport can approve certain suspension mods.

anybody with half a clue would be most helpful with my research, thanks alot out there. I am aware of the implications regarding insurance and all that as they love washing their hands of modified vehicles

Cant a man just get 4 inches more out of his hilux....

In WA it is also illegal but many people have been getting away with it doing an application for the modification, engineering and then a lane change test is required, once it passes without rolling, your vehicle will be fully legal with the 4 inch lift kit as well as insured correctly.

I'm sure that's what's been happening over in QLD also... Speak with Ken O'Keefe at Ultimate Suspension, I am sure he would give you a hand as to what to do...... his number is 02 9603 7677

Cheers

Would be keen to hear the result of that if you go down that line.

ArkEngel,

why do you want this lift? for looks or you need it to run 35's or something?

My hilux has a 3" front struts put in which with the ARB bar fitted dropped it down about 15mm.

I removed the front mudflap and trimmed a little and run 285's with almost no rubbing offroad - only in fraky circumstances and she flexes pretty good, so if running 33's is the issue then I dont think you need a full 4" lift kit and save your pennies.

A good 2" lift kit, some trimming could see you running skinny 33's like 33/10.5x15 or 255/85x16 (which is actually 33.3x10.3), then the money you save put towards a rear ARB locker and you will go almost anywhere.

Just an idea, the ultimate kit is a good kit but it is also alot of money.

;)

mmaaxx

yeh mate im in agreeance with you there for sure. In answer to your question its mainly for wow factor, blow the socks off a few people round town lol

My alternative plan is as like u just said to maybe go with the 3" front struts, might give bilsteins a go. or keep the ones i got because according to snake racing their putting a 20mm front coil spacer in the next couple weeks out so that may be a cheaper fix cuz the 2" front struts i have are near new.

tyres wise i think im gonna be happy enuff to run 32" or in my preferred case 265/75/R16. You're right on the money with the lockers so yeh im exploring other avenues and doing a little soul searching.

thanks for input tho mate, always welcome

Just an update.

I've bitten the bullet and have decided to go in another direction to the 4 inch lift. Have ordered a set of 265/75/16 maxxis Bighorns and am going with air lockers front and rear and tweak the suspension front and rear to gain a cheeky inch or two. a cheaper and probably much more useful option. decision came down to money basically. had 5 grand to play with and was pushing the limits for the 4 inch lift kit anyhow.

one day it'll happen but not this day.
