TRD Hilux - overall tyre diameter increase

Postby Hilux Max on Wed, 25 Jul 2007 8:55 +0000

G'day to my fellow new Hilux members.

Spoke to one of the blokes I know involved with the TRD Hilux project and asked him if he could tell me what the overall diameter of the tyre will be of the new TRD Hilux. Knowing that it'll be biger after seeing a few of them, thou I wanted a specific answer.

He told me that they will be 30.5" diameter which is about an inch increase on the SR5 but correct me if Im wrong please.

What does this mean for us? Well, it means that if going by the book and you put 2" diameter larger tyres than the largest available for that particular model, then this would be the new standard size to work off, which would allow you to "legally" run 32.5" diameter tyres.

Which gets me thinking that I might just get away with my 285's when and if ever pulled over by the cops for an "enquiry".

Oh, and when they come out, just ask your dealer for a new tyre placard sticker to repl;ae your old one that states what the new revised size included is, so you can always refer to it if need be.

That will make you blokes running 265's perfectly legal. 8-)

Mmaxx,

30.5" is the STD dia. tyre equivalent as fitted to my SR5. That is 30.5" does not equate to a one inch increase in diameter.

Hey Mmaxx do you think that will include pre 2007 models as well. I still think we might have a hard time getting away with it though. The TRD hilux will have upgraded brake etc, and so that might make it technically not the same model as the sr5. Hope it does make a loop hole for us all though.

This is a good site for tyre diameter measurements. http://www.tyresave.co.uk/tyresize.html

The tyre shop's fitment book says standard dia is 740mm which is 29" (I measured mine and it is 720mm on the ground.) This means the max height would be 790mm or 31" by the book I think??

T-Lux,
I understand what your saying that 29" is the standard size which means 31" is the biggest going by the book, but Im saying the TRD hilux will have a 30.5" diameter tyre, therefore by the book you could fit 32.5" coz you would take that as the reference from then on.

Vicroads says that you may legally go 2 " larger diameter than the largest available tyre for the model.

Sounds good to me, by the way, I just got a price on some bridgestone A/T 694 31x10.50 15" of $210 each. I just checked the load rating, they are 109 which is 1030kg and the standard d840's are 112 which is 1120kg. This would matter wouldn't it?Apparantly they are 778mm tall by the book. Am I on the right track with buying these as a replacement for the factory tyres?

Hey Trent,
Your spot on with your selection. I had 275/70/16 a/t 694s on my Navara and they performed great. I will probally go the same way once i get through all the tyres I have here (10).

The load rating is not an issue as the 109 rating is still more than that required for any axle combination. ie, 1600kg rear on the SR5 D/C.

If it rains again tommorrow i'm of to look for some mud.

I had the chance to look at a TRD HiLux proto type some weeks ago when it was parked behind the local dealers service dept and the tyres were 265/60/17, that means they are the same overall dia as the SR5 which is 29.1" It also had drum brakes on the rear. Can you believe that?

I would assume that the rule and regulations regarding tyre size would bebased upon your model of vehicle and year of manufacture. I doubt this would change each year a new model is released. Tyre size etc is all relevant to the break size, suspenison etc etc

So in conclusion I would assume that vehicles like mine with 32 inch tyres would remain illegal. Or am I wrong?

QLD allows a 50 mm suspension increase and a 25mm over wheel diameter increase. Anything outside either of those is illegal and means your vehicle does not qualify for a Blue Slip (safety certificate).

TRD Hilux - overall tyre diameter increase

I have been searching qld govt pages to find the right info on the max trye height increase and everywhere I look it is +15mm from the largest original equipment available for that model. It is the same in all states apart from tassie. If anyone can post up a link to a govt website that shows more than 15mm that would be awesome! ps. I am pretty sure that the tyre dealer I went to thinks a 50mm increase is within limits. Trent.

I contacted the RTA technical department here in NSW and the same applies, a max increase of 15mm diameter and can only increase track by 25mm. 4WD vehicles are treated the same as any other. Anthing outside of this requires an engineers certificate. They also provided me with a list of Engineers. I rang one just to see what they would say on upgrading to 31 inch. He had no problem with that and said it would cost about $400 to have the vehicle certified. I don't know if it is that easy when you start talking larger diametres
On the internet you can be anything you want. It is strange that so many people choose to be stupid!
