Just wondering whether any of you fellas actually rotates the spare (5th) tyre?

If so why.

The manual says do so and the tyre mob says it is not necessary.

Help.

I never have. It might be handy to do if you want to change brands or profiles next time so you're not stuck with a spare that's different form the rest.

There is a real reason behind this, I think it's got something to do with the quality of tire, it slowly gets worse over time when it's not being used..... I can't remember the actual reason but I'll find out next time I am visiting a mate who works for a tyre manufacturer.

On an SR5 tghat would mean fitting the 5th tye to one of the alloy rims as the spare is on a steel rim. Too much messing around!

Dave and Waz thanks for the replies.

Troyota, I actually got an alloy as my 5th NOT a steel one.

Yeah, it sucks that Toyota had to put a steel rim on the spare.

That makes it very troublesome to do tyre rotation on the 5th tyre.

5th tyre

You should rotate the fifth tyre... The reason is rotating the fifth tyre will prolong the life of your set of tyres 20% longer... as long as the tread pattern is the same..... Yes It is a stuff around but thats the tyre guys job...while your relaxing having a coffee in the waiting room..thats the reason they don't want to do it, to much of a stuff around for them.... and you will be back sooner buying new tyres... also tyres can tend to go off after several years of just sitting around not being used. I would advise doing it...

TOMUCH Although you theoretically increase tyre life by 25% if you rotate the spare, when the time comes to buy new tyres you have to pay 25% more because you have to replace 5 tyres and not 4, so it kind of works out the same, althought i do agree its probably better not having the spare tyre sit around unused for so long. Just my 2 cents:)

Troyota, your two cents ....a valid point...., and as you stated, it is better not to leave the spare unused.... I have also noticed that many people swap and change the brands and or tread profile of their tyres from set to set...looking for the elusive best tyre....that will force ( some people anyways) to replace the spare ... You wouldn't believe how many times I've seen guys driving around on MT type tyres and have a different spare..LOL.... Cheers...TOMUCH
