Happened to me after a few water crossings, just pushed the underguard back into place and tied it back

do you guys think that the 31's could hit the upper control arm.
the rubbing somewhere has only come about when i changed the tyres to 31's

David the best thing you could do is take the wheel off and have a look. To see if it rubbing, you will see it straight away, there would be marks on the inboardside of the sidewall and the top of the Upper control arm. To get a rubbing noise at that speed it would sound like something is getting blown back onto the tyre or that back soft rubber defector flicking around in the breeze. Which will hit underneath on the floor of your drivers or passengers side creating the impression of rubbing.
Another area to check would be the tie rod end as I do know that that is fairly close to the rim area of 15 inch rim on SR5 offset the car and you could have a rouge wheel balance weight touching at speed. (unlikely but!!!)
The last one to check is the SR5 alloys tend to grab a bit of sand and mud on the inner board diameter which can slightly throw out the balance and create high speed wobble. If you drive in sand a fair bit worth a look.
Hope this helps the alloys tend to accumulate sand and crap that is bloody hard to hose out. Due to the offset.
Dont be afraid to take the wheels of and have a proper look. And use a wheel brace to retighten. And clean the inside of the wheel before putiing back on.
Cheers

31 Inch Tyres

Postby Matthew on Sun, 13 Jul 2008 1:17 +0000

Now that I have the OME 2 inch lift on my 2007 SR5, I take it from this web site that 31 inch rubber can go on without any rubbing etc. Is this case? Are you better to retain 15 inch rims or put larger rims on? Cheers. Matt

Matthew.
It all comes back to how much you want to spend. There is more tyre selection in the 16inch diameter rims with width and profile. But I am running the std Sr5 15'' alloys with 31x10.5x15s and they are fine. Got 5 alloys so that I can do a 5 tyre rotation and prolong the life of the tyres.

Matt,
I to am running 31x10.5x15s on a nonstandard rim (actually a Navara Rim not sure of offset). I get jus a little rubbing on the front plastic mudguard at near full lock but only when the suspension is compressed, like over a bump or backing out of the driveway like a race car.

Other than that, I think the 15" tyre size has a reasonable selection at probably a better price point than 16" (happy to be wrong though).

Cheers

Matthew, I've got 31" rubber on standard SR5 rims with stock suspension. ou should have no worries.

Bigger is not always better in my book and I am still legal!

See my profile for tyres I have. Have been very happey with them , 8,000 km now. Perform well of road

Some say you save a lot of money by stickeing with 15" rims 'cos rims and tryes are cheaper!!

IMO,
the only reason to go to 16's is if you want to put bigger brakes on your lux.
Standard SR5s come out with 15's but if you put Prado brakes or others then you will need 16's or 17's to clear these.
I prefer to stick to larger profile (smaller size rims) because you get a little bit more of a balloon on your tyres when you deflate, and can hold slightly lower pressure than the equivalent in a larger diameter rim.

31inch tyres & rubbing somewhere

Postby david allan on Sun, 13 Jul 2008 10:08 +0000

went through everything today & put zip ties any where that could be causing it to rub or simething being loose.

had to go for a couple of hour drive this afternoon & the noise has definatly not there as much as it was before.
I thought i did hear it once, but it didnt happen again.

hopefully the guards were making the noise & it isnt something else

thanks guys for your help
still dsent really make sense that i dont get any rubbing on full lock at all, but only at high speeds.
might also tie the front mud flap just in case that is doing something aswell

31 Inch Tyres

like others have said depends how much you wanna spend and what you wanna do. on the standard sr5 rims, the biggest you can fit is probably a BFG 33/10.5x15 or if you can still find them the BFG 33/9.5x15's. would work ok with your lift thou your gearing will be abit out as will be your braking.

one of the members here has fitted 32/11.5x15 on his sr5 rims, thou you really need an 8 inch wide rim for these if you can find someone to do it, then go ahead.

Nastie, the 15's that you were running had a massive offset, I dont think most blokes on here would want to run such a big offset and availability fo 15x8's that fit the new hilux are very rare.

Yeah, I did have a large offset rim but needed a similar offset to rim the 33/12.5Rs without rubbing on the inside and went for 10" wide rims too. There are a fair few to choose from now, saw a lot of them when hunting around for my 16's (Amazing how everything seems to pop up when you don't need them anymore). I only got the 16's to clear my 80 series front rotors.
The biggest problem I found with running the larger offset rims was that the hub/spindle arm is prone to bending, replaced a fair few and they aren't cheap either!

31's is the max you'd want to go with stock wheels and suspension. Once I do a 3 inch lift, I'll more than likely go to the 33's.

31 inch tyres: may void warranty and increase fuel consumption. So what are the benefits? Beginning to think I should stick with the standard SR5 rims and tyre size. Any comments so that I may make an informed decision welcome.

Thanks for all the input with my post seeking advise on 31 inch tyres and 15 inch rims. Bit the bullet and put on Cooper STs 31/10.5R15 on my standard SR5 Rims. Notice a bit of extra road noise than my Cooper ATRs but not enough to worry about. Absolutely no rubbing anywhere, but I knew that would be the case. Special thanks to Rob (aka WTF) for his guidance.

Thanks again.

Matt
