Hilux Brakes

Handy tip that thanks Crossport.

I was only thinking the other day that the bloody handbrake comes up a long way, i'll have a look at 'em at the weekend, it's in for it's second annual service next month but you know the old saying...if you want the job doing proper.....do it yerself.
I mentioned the poor brakes and judder when the truck was about 6 months old, the mech couldn't find any fault (wonder if he'd have found the problem if it wasn't warranty but chargeable?) so i doubt if they'll bother to look at rear brake adjustments.

I did improve the braking on my truck a lot, Mintex now offer a direct replacement pad for the mk6 in the UK, i bought a set and there's a hell of a lot more bite than with the original pads, it just wouldn't pull up before.

Thats how there meant to work but often they are just an epic fail at achieving this...

I use my brake in reverse all the time coming down places I should never have attempted to go up in the first place... mine are still not adjusted right...

Felix,

Let you know later once I do some errands today. They satellite decoder went kaput last night and my wife wants it fixed pronto.

Quinny,
OK. So, the reversing method does not work then.

Have to find the special screwdriver that Doug67 mentioned to adjust the rear brakes.

Later.
Cheers

Not sure if this will be helpful for you Brendon, but anyone else can just slip down to Super Cheap Repco and pick up a brake adjusting tool. :D

Any good auto parts place should have them. Not very expensive and handy to have.

Yes but as discussed there are massive tax breaks in Thailand for manufacturers who build utes with rear leaf springs and drum brakes

Felix,

I did my errands today and got the satellite decoder fixed. While doing the errands the brakes does seem to bite better.

I think it's worthwhile to do this adjustment.

Quinny,

Rod,
Thanks for the tip. We don't have this tool over here. Ah.... the beauty of living in a developing country....   Will see if I can get a mate to buy one for me and post it to me.
Cheers

Bloody hell Brendon, you want to kiss Mark thats up to you, dont count on me though

Those special adjusting tools make the brake adjusting so much easier,

When I first started using my lux off road I noticed the HB hardly came up 2 or 3 clicks instead of 7 or 8. Checked every thing and seemed allright. Found out off the forum here they self adjust in reverse with sharp short stabs of the brake pedal. Did spend a bit of time reversing down hills to have another go

My ability has improved a bit since then, so use mentioned tool works a treat.

Have a good day old mate, regards to you and yours

I tried the reversing while pumping the brake pedal trick this arvo and it's definitely made a difference to the braking! Brake pedal is firmer and the beast stops a lot quicker!

Dirk,

I tested the method by Macca today on my wife's Toyota Innova (MPV, RWD) and it actually works.

Don't have to go down and get dirty.

yep, found a steep hill and let the car roll backwards while pumping the brakes several times and it definitely works. much less brake pedal travel with noticable improvement in braking.

How much diference is there in the hand brake...

Crossport done mine the other night and the hand brake moves about a third of what it used to... much better at stopping now also...
