ARB or Old Man Emu only make a 5mm strut spacer.
I put in two to make 10mm. This is also the same part that fits the Prado IFS. The cost is $7 per strut spacer

ARB did the before and after measurements for me. 5mm gives you 15mm in this case. 10mm gave me 30mm on the right side, and 35mm in the left???? Go figure?

Front diff drop down kit

Postby Hilux Max on Fri, 29 Feb 2008 6:46 +0000

Well, finally me neighbours come through with me and me hilux is booked in for Tusday morning to get another inch put back on the front.

I measured a stock SR5 at work to day from the hub centre to the flare and then the same on my rig and the ARB bar has dropped my front by an inch or just under, because the flares are slightly different.

Therefore I'll be sitting at a full 3 inch or just over on Tuesday arvo. Thou I will not be getting coils spacers, but a new circlip ring on the strut, atleast thats what I call it - let me explain with a pic -

The ring Im talking about is on the bottom shaft part of the strut assembly. He will remove the silver ring that is there currently and has already organised to get made a ticker and stronger replacement unit that will be an inch taller. This part of the FOX strut dissassembles.

He has done this before once on another hilux with a smaller lift and its still going strong. Also says it will stiffen up the front abit which im happy with also as the front pretty soft.

wil let ya's know how I go with it.

This is why I was looking into the drop down kit aswell. I called Snake again today and he says the kit is NOT an inch drop down but as far down as you can get it to go, reasoning being the engine crossmember gets in the way. He said it doesnt affect the stock bashplate....I find that hard to beleive!

I checked out another Hilux at work about this and there are two mounts on the front side of the diff on either side of the vehicle and they just miss the bashplates, so I cannot see how lowering these mounts an inch will not affect the bashplate?

also, the rear mounts looks like it has an alloy block that sits through it and this I think gets replaced with a smaller one, which is how it drops the rear. Achieves a 9 degree reduction in angle.....not sufficient for the effort and your front will sit an inch closer to the ground.....DUH! :o

mmaaxx, that ring around the strut that lifts the base plate looks like it would work with the ome struts as well, i'm pretty sure that is what skog07 wanted to do with his. would have to check strut diameters to see if there the same though.

shane,

I wouldnt know what other brand of struts are like, but if they are the same then I dont see how it wouldnt work.

me mate, reckons you get abit more tension in the spring aswell.

will let you know how it is when completed. and will add pics too.

you guys can learn from my mistakes...LOL 8-)

Hey Mmaaxx.
Putting a ring underneath the strut increases preload on the spring and increases the tension in the spring, and will give a marginal increase in the spring rate and like you said and will push the ride height up as well. The spring will also work harder as the preload is increased and will make the spring sag quicker as it is also working harder. For the same spring rating kg/mm. And a strut packer simply resets the original height but does not increase the spring rate at all.
After I get back from the trip, I am going to turn up a 5mm sleeve/ ring to see if I can preload the front and reset the front slightly to fix the drop of the dual batts, my fat arse and 25000ks of driving. On lifted and modified suspension. Will trial it for a while but if it starts to sag again its time to increase spring rates. Will keep you posted and take photos and take measurements as well.

Just got back from Arb. The strut packer that is used on OME fits underneath the spring retainer and is retained by the welded shoulder on the bottom of the shock. Like the collars that I wanted to fit later on. The cost $5 bucks each and take around two hours to fit each. They also claim that a 5mm collar will give a 30mm lift on the front. I think is would be more like 15mm though.

These are the Old Man Emu 5mm Strut Spacers. I have two installed, giving me 30mm extra in the front.
The one down the bottom (The dirty rusted one) was installed 15 months ago. I recently installed the second one (Nice and shiny) a month ago.
