How Many People Have broken a CV yet?

Postby Wade on Mon, 21 Jan 2008 6:56 +0000

Just wondering how many guys out there have broken a CV? (Apart from harrisbm). I know a 4X4 Australia test hilux that broke the CV boot on the way to the top.
Who else?

Guys
i am interested in this as well, how many have been broken and the nature of terrain involved , just normal 4x4 or full on hard stuff. Was the vehicle raised or standard height , just curious as the issue may be caused by extreme angle on CV's.
Am running 3 inch lift on mine
Cheers Drew

I have heard that there is a hilux in a mine in QLD that has done 2 CV's and it's only got 60,000km's on the clock. It spends it's life on the mine roads and the drillers tracks so the tracks it's going up are probably medium to easy, so they can get the drill trucks in there as well. as for changeing them I dont know but i would be very corious to find out.

hiluxdan, you can drive out in 2wd, 3wd if you have a front locker. You just won't have drive to that wheel you broke.

matske, was it hard terrain? What was the cost to replace the CV?

Cheers

ok thanks matske. I'm just trying to work out what the weak point is and how it breaks.

Is it the CV boot? Or is it the CV joint? Or is it the CV axle. (I can't imagine it would be the CV axle, but i thought i would ask anyway.)

We'll i have done 5 with 40k's on the clock. 3 extreme and 2 soft. This is a contest you don't want to win is it's expensive as all hell to replace as my inners went and when they break they bend the front shock. Yuri will soften a set which helps.

I can understand the live axle conversion. Any particular side that has broken more than others and is this under full lock with lockers engaged. I brought this up before in another thread is there A doudle cardan alternative available? I have heard you can get these for jeeps?

the weak points would be designed where they join the flanges around the uni joints. Same as any axle, especialy free floating ones, they are desinged to shear off the splines and a certain breaking point to limit damage to other parts of the axle.
