Low Range 2wd

Postby seanjfitzpatrick1 on Mon, 11 May 2009 5:57 +0000

Hi all,
Has anyone any knowledge on how the transfer case locks in the front tail shaft as well as selecting low range? The idea is that it would be great to select low range 2wd. My hilux, although I'm not sure is probably overweight, runs 245/70-17's and the clutch is copping a flogging when I'm on a mine site and I don't need 4wd. Also would be perfect for backing a trailer or low speed manouvering on hard road etc.
Manual hubs would solve this but it looks expensive and difficult, manually actuated ADD would also but would be a waste of a front diff.
In my old 80 series 4wd was selected with the button on the dash and low range was selected with the transfer lever. This was achieved by pulling a plug next to the transfer case. Handy setup.
Any thoughts?

The front driveshafts, theres one that is always turning but as soon as you8 select low range via the lever, a sleeve slides over the other and they are both locked in then...thats my understanding.

not sure if there is a low range 2wd hack...there might be a way of doing it, I just havent looked into it meself as I do not need it...others willchime in surely.

I think this is what you want;

but I am not sure that it works for our transfer case.

Sean,

There is a post that I and a couple of others did, it is about setting up a switch that allows you to use low range without 4wd, check out a post called electrically disconnecting the front diff

It gives instructions on how to do it.

I have put the switch in mine to unhook the front end, it would have to be one of the most usefull mods i have made and i use it on a daily basis for backing the trailer, apparently you can only do it to the sr5's.
