The people with 3lt Patrols and standard ECU do it because they have problems with the EGR valve failing and loosing power, they will tell you it goes better with it blanked off but in real life they put out less power and use more fuel.
It is harder to get good power increases out of the new technology engines these days with out doing expensive mods.
If they use a programmable ECU ( not a chip) they may be able to get more power by blocking of the EGR valve but with a standard ECU I doubt it.
You don't say if yours is a petrol or diesel.
