I went into the local Toyota servicing dept today and got one of the mechanics to sit in the driver's seat and discussed the "problem". He fished the Owner's Manual out of the glove box, flicked to page 216 and went through Toyota's procedure, as below
Shifting between H4 and L4 (automatic transmission)
1. Stop the vehicle
2. Shift the shift lever to N.
3. Push and turn the front-wheel drive control switch to L4.
The low speed four-wheel drive indicator light will come on.
He explained that Neutral position was necessary to remove any strain on the transmission imposed by Park.
You learn something every day.
