Rich exhaust smell and white-ish smoke

Postby darbio on Sat, 07 Mar 2015 7:11 +0000

Hi guys,

I have a 1998 Hilux with 2.7l petrol (3rz-fe).

It smells very rich when running, and seems to lope at idle.

At 2000rpm with no load it also seems to stutter.

With load on the engine the stutter isn't noticeable.

Looking at the exhaust fumes, every time the engine stutters a puff of whiteish smoke (petrol?) comes out.

When the engine is cold, it doesn't lope, however the white smoke is more prevalent.

I'll upload some videos later today.

Any ideas as to what this could be? And how to fix it.

I don't think it's s head gasket as the smoke doesn't seem to be steam - but I may be wrong.

Thanks :-)

Putting the air con on makes the stutter less noticeable when at idle.

Idleing without a/c it's almost like the engine is going to stall every second or so.

When running, do you see bubble in the coolant?

NOTE. Remove the Radiator cat when cold, then start engine and run until warm.

Engine doesn't appear to be overheating when I run it hard (100km trip yesterday, didn't over heat)

Ended up being a leaking vacuum hose. Fixed and she runs like a dream!
