If not already mentioned, put line clamps on both hoses when disconnecting and when the filter change has been done, fit supply hose and remove the clamp but leave the outlet hose off. Prime the filter housing till fuel comes out of outlet, fit the hose and remove the clamp. This way very minimal air will make it to the pump and injectors and will start and run no worries, I do this to all diesels I service, never a hassel. Sometimes the locking colar wont rotate (dry seized) and will come free with the aid of crc and the use of multigrips with the housing mounted in a vice. I also drain the housing, you will be horrified whats at the bottom, clean out with carb cleaner, grease orings lightly. No need for periodical replacement, please, everyone I have done is black!
