Hybrid-Hilux

Heard a rumour the other day that the next gen Hilux will be offered in a Diesel Hybrid version! you rekon there could be any truth in that?

Mate they cant even put disc brakes on the back so what chance do you think there is of hybrid technology in a truck. Toyota have not done any work with diesel hybrids as far as I know and I remember reading a comment by one of the senior Toyota people from Japan that they see the future is going to be petrol hybrids

In China they are testing small diesel driven generators to charge electric cars. The gen only charges the batteries so it works at a constant rpm and load so they can achieve the best possible economy, sill top up by mains and extend the range.
They are putting the drive in each wheel just like a haul pack so no wasted power.
This is by no means new technology, just having the demand they have could get it too the production line soon.

wouldnt that be briliant, you can get to close to 1hr per 1ltr on diesel gensets due to this running at a perfect load / rpm.

True but not for the aust market yet... maybe 5 more year until we see a Hilux Hybrid. More likly to get a Prado or LC200 Hybrid frist in the Aust market.

Just regarding the hybrid technology I thought Id mention some first hand feedback on it.

I picked up a new hybrid camry company vehicle for the misses the other week. Let me just say that I am totaly surprised with its fuel economy......on the first half of the tank we have driven 480km with an average fuel consumption of 6.8 litres per 100km.....the trip computer says we should get on 800km out of the tank.....not bloody bad!

I have to admit, I was against this technology and still kind of am, but I beleive it would only work on city/pasenger vehicle and not a 4x4 for a few reasons.

The battery tends to take over when there is very low load on the vehicle....so if you driving below 60kph, going down a sloping road etc. When you stop at the traffice lights or anywhere else, the engine switches off.....gives you the shits because as the lights turn green and you stand on the gas the engine has to fire up before taking off.

There is a huge amount of torque thou when your rolling and you slam your put on the gas to accellerate.

I dont beleive it would work on a 4x4 effectively because the extra load caused by more weight, more wind resistance, larger tyres etc would mean the battery would not run as often as it should unless they could change the paremeters of when it kicks in.

Just a quick feedback report on it. And no, Im not doing it to keep Ju-liar or Bob Brown happy.

Toyota owns Hino and they have hybrid small trucks, not sure if they are petrol or Deisel. They also have disc brakes all round
