Tundra... Thoughts and opinions?

Postby Monster Rides on Mon, 28 Sep 2009 9:15 +0000

G'Day All,

We are talking to a company that is looking to import and convert the current shape Tundra from the US next year.
Might be a product we are willing to sell, if there is a market for them

EDIT*** Note, not new trucks, second hand, low milage imports ***EDIT

Just after some feedback on the truck, it's size, specifications etc.

What people would be willing to pay for such a truck?

Whether you think its too big for what you do with your 4x4 etc.

This vehicle is clearly a great option for those who tow, or have big families etc.

Obviously this vehicle will be quite a bit more expensive than a Hilux, maybe twice the price, but when you consider what people spend on upgrading their trucks with suspension and power upgrades these trucks might not be out of the question for some people?

Here are the basic size specifications, and then those of the mighty Hilux as a comparison:

Quite a bit bigger, but not as much as a F250 etc.

Here are the basic specs... more info can be found on the website
http://www.toyota.com/tundra/features.html

Some options we would offer:

Liquid LPG injection
3-6" Suspension lifts
Wheels and Tyre upgrades
Protection and Recovery gear

Something we are looking at as a package would be:
5.7L V8
LPG
3" Suspension lift
35's on 18" rims
Bullbar
Towbar

at about $90'000ish.

What do you guys think.

Still not sure on warranty, but hoping a 2 year 60'000km item would be the minimum.

Anyways just after some ideas and thoughts...

Cheers
MR

Price sounds fair if they are brand new rumours I heard before were of a company bringing in 2nd hand ones for that price and more depending on the year model.

I would love one but even at that price would be waiting for a 2nd hand one to pop up. Personally I wouldnt be interested in wheeling it on anything other than sand or easy tracks. I would want it for towing 8-)

I love those trucks....looking at your specs above the Tundra is actually shorter....that was a surprise to me

For offroading the trucks are WIDE....and have a longer wheelbase more things to get caught on etc.

For towing I have heard they are great.

As much as id love one unfortunately its out of my price range.....

good luck with your endeavour.....

Boof,

Just realised the original post might be a bit misleading.
Good chance these trucks would be second hand at the price quoted.
Used the current spec as they will be second hand by the time they get here, mostly 09 models and 08's.
New would add some dollars, at least 10-15K I would guess.

Also the prices indicated are a best case scenario price, based on current exchange rates etc.
That price could really blow out with a lower $AUD, or more expensive vehicles or parts etc.

I think they will end up to expensive actually... thats why I'm after some opinions etc.

I will edit the original post, sorry to all for that.

Now.... Your right on the limited 4x4 use, but for that kind of sand/easy track ans snow work you wouldn't get a much better vehicle. The size would be nice and the luxury and power would be superb.
On straight gas with great fuel economy they would be sensational... maybe some forced induction to keeps things even!

Max,

I stuffed up the length on the Tundra, should be 5819mm, so its about 565mm longer than the Hilux, I changed it on the original post.

Quality control around these parts has turned for the worse lately!

Interesting idea. I can't understand why Toyota persist with the tiny 70 series market when they could replace ours with a RHD Tundra. I reckon they will do that eventually but they need a diesel in the Tundra first.

I think the market for a converted 2nd hand Tundra would be strong in the racecar, horse and big caravan towing industry if it had a good turbo diesel. I'd be up for a new one.

You probably already know this but getting a tundra past ADR rules would be an absolute nightmare, not to mention that all imports must now have emission tests or be Euro spec compliant, which means an aditional $30k to your base line. You will notice that most importers focus on diesel trucks from the US as diesel is exempt from the latest regulations. Also Toyota Australia will make it extremely difficult when applying for your RAWLS or equivalent compliance.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but i wouldnt get to keen on one...

There is a couple of reasons why Toyota dont bring the Tundra into Oz you know and one is the expence of making a RHD for such a small market and the fact that the Hilux actually has a better payload then the Tundra. The reason Ford did not bring the F150 in was also because a Falcon ute had a higher payload . Can you imagine how much it will cost to run one when fuel prices skyrocket again. If you look at the price of the Dodge and GMC dual cabs that are currently sold in Oz the price is ridiculous compared to what they cost in the US (Tundras range from $23K to $43K in th US new) and you cannot park them anywhere. I certainly dont think they will sell here.
