EGR blank off plates 08 d4d ( Australia )

Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of fitting a block off plate to the EGR on a 2008 d4d -SR I have read that without a chip-it chip I will need to drill a 8-12mm hole to prevent a fault code ?? , has any one fitted one without drilling on a stock engine with no problems ????
