Loss of top end power D4D SR Twin Cab 2008

Postby tarseamae on Thu, 17 Nov 2011 6:48 +0000

Hey Guys,
Just bought 2008 SR D4D Manual with 55000ks.
Drove great for one tank of fuel.
The other day I noticed it rough idling when clutching to a stop in traffic.
Then it went??? idling normally.
Did this a couple of times and hasnt returned.
Changed fuel filter.
Out on the open road it pulled normally to a bit over 2000rpm and then it flat lines.
Pulls normally to this point, smooth with power and then stops pulling but holds this point normally.
Seems the higher the load (gear) the worse it is.
The bottom half of the go pedal does nothing.
Any ideas guys??
Cheers
Sean

Do these things have a MAF meter? I'd be cleaning that and checking the air filter first

Thanks Max.
I have found the source of the problem!!
Not MAF.
My speedo was going haywire so I cleaned the connection.
Speedo steady now but reading double.
Engine pulls to 200k by speedo then no more.
Seems overspeed kicking in which I can get from top of third gear.
Disconnect speedo and presto, problem gone.
Anyone know what would cause speedo to register double actual speed?
Cheers

My hilux was losing power as above-mentioned noticed first time overtaking a bunch of cars.. I an 2 fuel filters and found apon inspection they were both dirty as.. must have bought dirty fuel from bouser. Changed them both and yeah its all better.. I sold it last week at 92000 km and bought a dmax LSU (sr5 equiv) totally wrapped.. fuel consumption in town averaged 9:5L/100k. Auto pulls awesome.. so I guess im sold to Isuzu..

It's true that a lot of people are sold on the fact that the name is Hilux and they never actually considered the specs of the vehicle. It's a fact that this current D4D engine is the weakest torque in its class and is by far the most expensive with least included options. I Have a 2010 SR5 which is a company car. I'm glad it is though as it a lot of coin to fork out.

Yep i agree, lot of good options in the ute market at present, With good power and spec levels. Toyota is in for a challenging time.
