Engine Issue...

Postby Monaz on Thu, 03 Nov 2011 6:17 +0000

G'day Fellas,

Ok, so my Brother and I were out driving around through the wilderness last weekend and came across somewhat of a mild water crossing..now although my truck breathes life through a snorkel my brothers does not. He drives a 2006 3.0L diesel Surf/4Runner and the crossing was a little deeper the third time through! ;) Consequently his old 3.0L sucked an airbox full of water and gulped enough to stall the engine mid crossing...after we towed it out we emptied the airbox of all the water, and checked the intake pipes. There didnt actually seem to be any moisture in the intake pipes to the Turbo at all? Anyways we managed to get it started again, and after it blew clouds of white smoke and litres of water from the exhaust (from the water entering once it stalled) it developed an engine knock, enough to cause the engine light to come on. The truck is down on power and the knock is only there once the engine is warm, in fact the light doesnt come on for a few minutes when cold? We changed the engine oil that afternoon and there was no visable water in it at all. Oh and it blows no more smoke than usual either....

My question is...anyone have any thoughts on what could be wrong? Bent valve, rod possibly? Damaged Injector/s?
Any ideas will be truely helpful....we have had a Mechanic basically just say its f*#cked and he needs to put a reco donk in at around $5000! Not likely....Cheers in advance lads.

injectors don't like water at all best bet change them or take them to a shop that rebuild pumps and in jectors and get them to test them out on there machines it will tell you if they are spraying the right amount and the right pattern of spray..
hope that helps..

Its never good news hearing a story that could involve a costly repair. Hope it works out well for him :?

It will have only hurt injectors if the water got in the fuel tank then pumped through the fuel system, doesn't sound like it would have happened in this case.
The engine stopped then blew white smoke when restarted, thats water in the cylinders, my money is on a bent rod or two and or some damaged pistons.
Don't waste your money checking injectors, unfortunately the problem won't be that simple.

Thanks for all your replies fellas...it seems the consensis is a bent rod or two. Bugger! I think Scotty (my Bro) has decided its going to be an engine out to check anyways....fun times ahead! :?

UPDATE: Those of you that said bent rod? CORRECT! Number 4 to be exact. My bro was driving (minimally) the truck around for a couple of weeks while we waited for the engine to arrive from interstate. As luck would have it, he was driving to my house to start the engine swap and BOOM, the 4th rod and piston decided to come out through the block! So I had to go and tow him the last 2k's back to mine.
Anyways long story short, he managed to get a block with a reco head on it for $500, with an $1100 reciept for the head work! Only thing was it had no timing gear, nothing but a bare block, so that all needed to come from the blown motor. So engine out, start pulling the timing gear off and we notice that the fuel pump bearing had completely died, two balls left, no cradle and bearly the inner ring staying in place! In the process of that ocuring, the balls, we assume on their way to the sump, had smashed several teeth off the idler gears and so forth. So it was off to Toyota for all new gears, bearings, seals and what ever else! In the end, short of removing the head and the crank, everything was replaced.
Fast forward to engine back in truck, a couple of dry cranks with no glow plugs to listen for any unconventional noises, which was nil... :D ...it started as soon as the fuel pressure returned! Whoo Hoo!!!
Ok so it's time for a test drive...Scotty puts the auto box into reverse, and nothing! No drive...thats ok we think, it lost a little oil during the change so we replaced the litre odd and tried again. Still nothing. After a few phonecalls were led to believe that its the auto oil pump. F*$king great. The auto specialist reckons it happened when the motor decided to let go and lock all of a sudden? Now we have to drop the box out. Thats done, box open and there it is, a smashed oil pump. So its back off to Toyota for more parts!
The saga continues....
