Black smoke getting worse

Postby Rik on Tue, 30 Aug 2011 11:26 +0000

Hi guys, i have been reading a few threads in here about black smoke and chips etc. I have a 2008 SR5 D4D with a Rapid chip and 2 & 1/2 inch exhaust. I love everything about my ute but i just hit 100,000km's and it seems im getting more and more black smoke.

At night up hill if i floor it i can hardly see the car behind me, it only ever use to pump out a little bit of black smoke but its at the point of needing to do something about it.

I was thinking of running fuel/injector cleaner through does anyone have any reccomendations of brands or something else they can reccomend?
Rather be out there than here.

1st step.....clean your MAF sensor in your airbox.....if this is dirty then it will be giving incorrect readings and pumping more fuel through than needed.

2nd step.....go to a dealer and get your injectors tested for cold start knock. Chips will excerbate any potential problems you may have....I suspect you have a faulty injector that is leaking more fuel than is needed. Coupled with a chip that usually runs a higher/richer mixture when operating it would increase the smokiness of the exhaust.

I reccomend doing this ASAP....for your pockets and engines sake.
