05 sr hilux starter motor crunching noises?????

hey guys i own a 2005 sr hilux, and a couple of times when ive begun to start it up and turn the key, it sounds like the starter motor crunches as if to make the exact sound it would if your car was already running and you turned the key, im concerned because it doesnt kick over from the first enitial try it cuts off and on the 2nd go, success, does anyone have any idea on what could be causeing this? please help me out asap as the longer i leave it the more damage i could possibly be doing, thanks

mine was doing that and it got replaced under warranty
when i spoke to colac toyota they said that the starter was full of mud and dust and the throw outs wernt engaging properly
he also said it cant do much damage

My first 05 lux started doing that, doesn't engage properly because it would most likely have mud and crap in there. Mine did it occasionally for about a month. Always intended on pulling it off to clean it out but it stopped doing it so I never bothered.

just pull it out, not very difficult. drop it off at an auto elec in the morning to rebuild and pick it up at night to re fit it.

shouldnt be any more than 100 bux to pull apart, clean it out and regrease ......
