can the hilux tie down points be used for recovery?

some people say they can and some people say you cant so what is your opinion. i was told today that you can as long as you are careful and that you split the difference between the two points. also as long as you take ap the slack slowly before snatching it should be fine. Let me know what you think...Glenn

Gleen,
This is my best attemt at confussing all.

If you use the following formula. Their is not a chance of me using one of the after market recovery points with 2 x 12mm unf bolts attaching them to a 3.14mm Chassis.

Tension on single bolt fT = f ?/ n = (z/2x) (f ?/n) = (z/2x) (f/n)sin (?) = f•y/(2•n•x) were f is the applied force of 3•g = 3•Wcg applied at the center of gravity.

Max load on bolt (assuming tension and shear simply add) is:

LB= 3•Wcg [1/(n+m) + y/(n•2•x)].

My advise is always share the load with either Standard or after market points (x2 or more). Do not just rely on one and always use a saftey lanyard so if something does go wrong the heavy bit is restrained (The hook/recovery point/Shackle).

Regards,

Crickeys camwill69, I think I just went crosseyed with your info!!
I personally would not use the tie down points.
I certainly agree with your

I' used the front one twice and the rear three times. First time on the rear I could not find an attachment point for the shackle and had to borrow an attachment piece that fitted in the haymond reese tow bar cost $60.
