hello, i have a 09 Sr5 petrol and i was wondering how well they do off road? i initially bought my car for on road/work and i know the D4D are probably the better option offroad, but i was wondering is it worth spending the money to raise my car so it handles better offroad?(e.g raise,bigger tires). My old car was a 2000 hilux diesel and i used to take it threw puddles and mud and had a blast, id like to do that now but im worried because its a petrol and im not too sure what i can and cant do with them as its my first time with one, so bassically want i want to know is, are the petrol V6 4.0 any good offroad on sand/mud and is it worth getting a snorkel for puddles and stuff? or should i stay clear of the puddles. Let me know ur thoughts.

mate those engines are thirsty as you know but other than that they go hard. being petrol they do have all the electrics but take it easy in the wet stuff and you'll be sweet. fit a snorkel and no probs with the air intake. other than that they go great. do it spend the coin and get it dirty

Thanks, yes they defently are thirsty haha, any idea on what electrics are at risk?

Hello Sr5luxy

Whether you purchase the Diesel or Petrol Hilux both are electronically fuel injected so care and commonsense still have to be taken into consideration around water, try to avoid anything deeper then axel height. The alternator on the Petrol does sit a little lower than the Diesel but the Diesel has a couple of ELC fuel injection components that sit just as low.

The petrol is more capable off road in the really tuff stuff as it has loads of very very stable torque from very down low in the RPM thus enabling you to gently get your Lux through.

Fuel economy is not that much worse than the Diesel, the petrol will use 3 to 4lts more per 100k but it produces substantially more HP. If you put the Diesel and petrol side by side on the hiway, both towing a 1800kg Ski boat and the person driving the petrol drove only to keep up with the Diesel (not blast past) you will find the results to be entertaining, the Diesel will use more. You will be very happy with your V6

Go the V6 mate, 175kw power 343 NM of torgue on the manual, even more on the auto..
You wont just be keeping up with the oil burners on tracks, You'll be overtaking them!!
Have a look at my shed for evidence that they go off road...... Theres not many of us on here (DLUXV6 is the only other one i can think of), alot of people tend to go the performance mods over the offroad ones when they get a petrol... but shit, do both!!
And yea as far as water goes just dont go stupid...... If i was gonna go bonnet deep i'd buy a boat! :lol:

I have a V6 Extra Cab and reckon it's great fun off road. May be a bit thirsty but not as thirsty as my brothers 4.8 litre patrol or a mates 4.5 V8 70 series. Plus it is lighter than both of them so the power of the V6 is a lot of fun off road. Give it a 2 inch lift (or more) put some 31's or 32's on it and go for it.
By the way i've been through a fair bit of mud and gotten the ute filthy many times and the only drama it caused was a noisy pulley which cost 60 bucks to replace

I used to think the 1gr-fe was indestructible and say I can buy a lot of petrol for what a diesal bloke spends on maintenance then I brought 1. The small fuel tank along with the amount of fuel it guzzels means I rarely drive past a servo, Ive spent close the same amount on maintenance as all the blokes I know with diesal hiluxs.
Timing chain ,rear main, water pump all the serpine belt pulleys theres heaps more. I should of brought a diesal in hindsight.
