Sat Nav Options

Howdy All,

just wondering what the consensus is on double din nav's im not going factory as they want 5K installed.

But ive been looking at the Eclipse AVN 6000 & VMS 3000 , i previously had a Kenwood /Garmin combo in my GU Patrol , but seeing i dont do offroad and its only for city and occassional north and south coast trips.

Ive seen the Eclipse and it looks pretty much like a factory unit.

Navman S50 GPS Receiver from Ebay. . . .IMO you dont need to spend heaps of money on an in dash GPS, the hand helds do a great job. . .

I do have a small nav unit for now a uniden one, but im a stickler for perfection hence the Double Din unit.

I've got a pioneer AVIC 900BT. Very happy with it. Got if for $1600 with bluetooth, DVD, USB, reversing cam etc. It actually runs a windows ce backend and is fully modifiable including running oziexporer etc. I got mainly because it is very slim in the dash and looks oem.

You can go for the Alpine product.

You'll need to purchase a Alpine IVA series double din unit and then the GPS unit PMD B100E.

The PMD B100E is a really good unit as it runs off your double din unit with full t/s capabilities and you can also use it as a hand held unit if you need it in another vehicle.

Looking at around $2500 etc for that option.

I got the Toyota unit in mine when I bought the ute for $2800 and have been very happy with it as there is also a lot of other things in the unit that I use regularly. I also have a Tom Tom one XL in another car and find it a great bit of gear as well especially for $300 and it can be upgraded very easily of the net for zero. I would get the Tom Tom again but dont think I would spend the extra for an indash unit.

It is result of the recent commerialisation of the open source RoadRunner Car PC frontend by its creator Guino. See http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/road-runner/

I use RoadRunner as my Front end and it rocks. If you read up on it, one of their test rigs was a Jeep and extensive off road testing.

So if you can work out how to get a PC in your car, the Odyssey Navigator software is very easy to use and very reasonably priced. see http://www.twig.com.au. All you need is a PC and a USB GPS receiver.

Here is my Car PC with a 7" LCD touch screen in a modified case stuffed in the dash showing the RoadRunner .


And here is a screen dump of Oddyssey Navigator (before I registered it). It runs happilly in the background while you change to other screens. When a voice announcement is made, the music player is muted so you can hear the directions.

I have just received my combo unit from China of ebay DVD TV GPS Radio Looks Good sound id Very good full maps of Au have a look on ebay item 320346504133 I will post more info when I have had time to play with it. Good part it is made to fit no adapters or face plates required. at under $800 delivered seems a good compromise. time will tell.

I'll be the first to admit that I dont know much about sat navs, thou I would like to get one at some stage.

Heres a question for you satnav guru's I hope some of you may be able to answer.

ALDI has a sale starting on thursday next week, and they have a Sat nav unit for 200bux for sale. yeah, I know it aint a Garmin or Magellan or the like but it is a 4.3" GPS Navigator with what they call Sensis Mapping....

My question is, does it have offroad maps and if not can I download off road maps into it?

GPS Mapping is one of the hardest things to sort out , but right now im leaning towards the Eclipse AVN 6000 and a Rear camera and ipod imput , i did manage to find a 2007 Factory system out of a Prado and ive been told that it will work and slide in, but the price is basiclly the same as a full install of the AVN and some accessories, and even Toyota have told me their system is the AVN just badged Toyota .....

I do like the small GPS units but once you've had big screen its hard to go back

Max, pretty sure sensis mapping is fom whereis.com.au which is a sensis company (like the yellow pages). For $200 you won't have off road mapping, you have to get into the dearer Magellens etc.

The one thing ive noticed about the AVN Eclipse and the Fujitus Ten Factory sat nav is that they done have preloaded School & camera zones, i wonder if this isnt because the Where is CD they run off doesnt have them installed on it, ive emailed where is , too see if when their next version comes out if there going to some where put them in, i would have thought that it would have been a good idea.

Im going to go with the eclipse for the moment as i like the factory look and the display so far, i did however manage to find a factory unit out of a wrecked 08 Prado in melbourne, that i could also get, and ive been told its pretty much a plug & play unit, Toyota spares also said the same, its should be a direct fit as Toyota uses all the same looms and plugs.

I wonder where the Prado Unit's GPS receiver is installed? I would expect it was external to the housing so it gets good reception. Don't leave it behind if it is not part of the headunit itself.

Most likely not, and even if it did you waould have very limited ability to plot routes etc.... off road mapping is very diferent to navigation mapping... It will be until they digitise the roads in the bush like the city and black top roads...

Offraod navigation is like drawing a snail trail over the top of a map image, and the navigation is normally done by setting way points with the apporpriate instructions... (IE turn right, turn left, turns nasty!)

Aldi unit would be enough for cruisin the streets though!
