Clicking noise coming out of engine bay?

Over the last couple of months after i switch the car off i have this clicking noise coming out of the engine bay. It's quite loud and it seems to be doing it more and more often. Does anyone else's lux do the same? and if so would anyone know if it's worth worring about as i have a trip up to shark bay in Feb.

Hi jogal,I am having a bit of a stab in the dark with this, but could possibly be the exhaust cooling down.
Do you think it happens more when you have been working the motor harder ?
I would do a quick test by just starting it up when its cool and run it say a min or so, turn it off and see if the noise is there

Hey Tasibrett the noise is exactly like the exhaust cooling down but about 10 times louder and it does seem to happen when the motor has worked harder but it seems to be coming from the motor or at least behind the intercooler.

I would loosen and re tighten all of the bolts holding on the tin heat shields, but remember done push your luck on getting them undone as they can be rusted and will snap

Hey Jogal,

I have experienced a similar occurance upon shut down of the vehicle.

The clicking only seems to last a few seconds and to me it sounds like a small pump or electric motor or the like winding down after the engine is shutting down. I'm guessing its off the air con or ignition or something like that...

Disclaimer- I'm certainly no mechanic and mention I'm only guessing so if you are still concerned perhaps a mech should have a look for you.

Any one else experience a rapid clicking noise for a few seconds after ignition is of??

As a matter of fact if I remember correct, turn the ignition only on (no engine start) and the clicking is audible then??? this was another reason I suspected a pump or some electric device...

Nah... that last clicking noise is the turbo relay.... NFI why it does that though as it gives me the sh##s... Sounds like a wood pecker on crack...

yes i have to agree i have a similar noise if you just turn on the ignition without starting and it definately comes from the turbo vane motor area

Hey guy's i finally found out where the noise is coming from it's a little black round unit that sits on top of the turbo i think i,ve got pictures but i cant work out how to upload them.It could be what Quinny 23 is talking about. If it is that do i need to worry about it?

Shouldn't be that loud... the normal turbo clicking noise is like... well bugger me... how do you explain it...

A grasshopper with an uzi... (fast paced low noise)

Not like the cracking of ice caps...

Also, mine makes a similar noise when hot/cold... and generally if turning the car of you never hear it as it only activates when ACC is on...

It may be this noise... but I'd get the toyo guys to look at it and make sure they note it down on the paperwork.. that way if it is your turbo on the way out, you can at least go back with an I told you so... Just my 2 bobs worth....

This sort of answers my question.

Mine does the same when ignition is on, but not always. I rang Toyota service and they said they knew about this and it's not a problem.

I miss the sound of my old 3" system... I wake in the middle of night with the sound slowly leaving the bedroom and me woundering where the F my keys are... and the voices.... Get a lefty... Get another 3" inches of lift... Get the water intercooler.... LOL... If it wasn't fun Id see a shrink...

I know where your coming from, with me it works like this;

Lux gets tyres................wife gets new shoes,Lux gets locker...............wife gets gold locket,Lux gets winch................wife gets gold chain, I have managed to break the cycle though, Lux gets bar..................Alby gets bar and still got it!!
Saving a fortune on Viagra.

But seriously like yours,my wife doesnt care what mods I do as long as she is comfortable when we go camping.
