Fuel Economy Figures, Post yours up!

General discussion of basically anything Hilux related

Last tank......orange light comes on with 20 litres left in the tank. Came in at 11.5/100klm so slightly better than the last one which was 11.8. The canvas over the steel canopy has made a fair improvement it seems. Oh and all the crap out of the back unloaded too probably helps a bit. I'm putting some Rhino racks and cage on the cabin soon so we'll see what happens to the figures then.

Sorry guys you all keep getting me confused.

11.2 would mean

1Liter per 11.2 km's?
or
11.2 liters per 100 km's ?

First one is WAY better ;) in The Netherlands we tend to report 1 Liter to X km's
i'm driving roughly 1 Liter per 8,5 km's that is 11.8 liters per 100 km's

Yeah, I would love to be getting the first option as well but sadly it's 11.2 litres per 100km. Not too bad for basically city driving though.

Oh yeah... I took another look on the way home from work tonight. The inbuilt trip computer thingie tells me I've averaged 9.2 litres per 100km. This is calculated since I purchased the vehicle last August. What's going on here? The 11.2 I got above (67.3 litres for exactly 600km) was actually done immediately after a service so it was also with a new air filter. Computer looks like it's way off the mark.

Hey Guys,

Either case my 09 SR5 Auto gets 9.7km /l (10.3l /100 km which ever way you want to look at it  )
That's with a tray, bull bar, ATs and roof rack installed.
Before it ws all fitted was getting more like 11.3km /l (8.8l /100km)

Cheers

I am getting around 11-12 litres, a mix of road and stop-start work, with a stupidly un-aerodynamic bullbar, steel tray, LR tank, lifted etc.

wow, are you only ever driving downhill? or is the wife talking to the lux all day?
Maybe you've got sails on the roof rack and always waiting for good winds :P

Sorry for quoting everything in km/L, but I only recently (via this forum) found out how to change the display on the dash to L/100km.

I picked up my 5 speed diesel 2013 SR5 Extra-Cab in July, and I've consistently recorded figures between 10.5km/L, and 11km/L. Towing the caravan gets me down to around 8.5-9km/L on average.
I installed a winch, two inch lift, and a UVP on Friday, and I'm already noticing an increase in fuel usage.
Next Friday the LRA 145L tank goes in, so I'm interested to see the overall change after she's all finished.
Fingers crossed it doesn't climb too much. Since getting rid of my old V8 commodore, I've been enjoying not having to buy fuel every week. Reading other people's figures doesn't get my hopes up though.

 HAHA Love this! the sail is good idea!!!
I really think it comes down to a few things, good engine care (regular services) and the way you drive!
When i say good engine care, i mean good car care in general, it might be a bit excessive, but things like swapping out the fuel filter every 20,000kms instead of every 40,000kms (like Toyota says) can help, also looking after the luxs shoes i found can make some difference. ALSO find a good mechanic!!! My mechanic is B&B Tyre and Auto in Moe, VIC, Great service, reasonable price and is also an ironman re-seller.

Once i get my new exhaust & get it tuned ill post up the new figures up too, should only get better right ;)

I find the range you get out of it is a bit less than what is displayed. When I fill up the tank full to the brim, I get a range reading of 675km. Real world figures according to the ODO reading were closer to 625km. This is when the range hits zero at which point I fill up again. It can probably go for another 100km but I've never really driven it much further beyond that point.

V6 auto 2inch lift with 235-80-16 bfg all terrains
usually use around 15-16 L/100 around town

Went to tamworth last weekend, 650kay round trip. drove it very easy unloaded and managed 13.5 l/100
Pretty happy with that on premium ulp

I'll have a look this week. At 640 km's at the moment. Computer reads 10.4. So 750 on 75L should be possible.... JUST...

Is there any way/need to bleed the fuelsystem? I've got a 20L can with fuel with me.

Forget using the on-board computer for fuel consumption - economy is often overly generous by around 10%
Its good as a comparative guide but not accurate for actual fuel economy

Assuming your tyre size correlates with your speedo/odo or if you factor in the known % difference:
Fill it up at around the 1/4 tank mark.
Record L to fill, divide by km travelled and multiply by 100
Or dial in a Scan Gauge (SG can also be out by a few %)

Unless you want to risk damaging your fuel pump, (possibly other components too) and possibly losing control of your vehicle at an unfortunate time, dont risk running the fuel tank empty

Some very basic advice:
http://www.caradvice.com.au/124376/why-running-on-low-fuel-is-bad-for-your-car/

A thread on the safety of running a gen 7 D4D empty
http://www.newhilux.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=24133

No - not a D4D but a CRD engine damage story all the same:
http://www.ausamarok.com.au/forum/archive/index.php/t-8076.html

And if you want to run it dry regardless; this thread on how to prime the lines:
http://www.newhilux.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=22967

Any one know of any D4D damage from running empty?
Perhaps some diesel specialists can chip in on the 'safe to run D4D out of fuel' thread above

Low fuel light comes on with about 100k to go but I wouldn't test it to empty... like pulling out the pin on a grenade and asking what happens now?? :o

You can bleed the system with the filter primer... keep pumping til it goes hard.

The computer is inaccurate... about 1l per 100k low. Best way is fill up to the brim... drive til the light comes on then fill again to the brim at the same pump... divide ltrs in by 100's k travelled i.e. 650k = 6.5 (100 k's) or 70ltrs/6.5= 10.76 l/100k ;)

2016 Hilux Dual Cab automatic SR5.

Computer says 8.5L/100km but I think that's inaccurate. From my fuel volumes it's like 10.5-11.5L/100km.

sounds ok depending on how you drive, if you plant the foot you will use much more fuel... do the calculations and check the computer... it almost certainly will read low.

I've driven 657 km's on 63 Liters (filling always to the neck)

that is 9.5 on 100L
or 10.4L/km (exactly what my computer said by the way... but thats coincidence I'm convinced :D )
