Diesel D4D Out of Fuel

Postby stevessss on Mon, 25 Aug 2014 11:21 +0000

Gday Guys,

I did the stupid today and ran out of fuel in my 2006 Diesel D4D Hilux.

What is the best way to get it to start again, and what is the procedure? Will I have problems.

How do I know if I have damaged anything?

Thank you,

Steve

best way to do it is to fill your tank, disconnect your return line and pump your primer until diesel starts pissing out, reconnect your return line and pump until solid. Crank her over till she starts, helps if you have another person so whilst your cranking there are priming the fuel filter.

also remove the fuel cap as this allows any air blockage to escape

Shouldn't you just be able to manually prime the fuel? There should be a button on the top of your fuel filter holder and you just prime it until you can't any more. Mine has one but it's a 2000 Hilux so it might be different for yours.

All diesels have a primer pump on top or below the diesel filter.

If your having troubles after doing that you may need to crack your injectors

All diesels have a primer of some sort, there not like petrol cars you can prime a diesel buy turning on and off the ignition

cracking this / disconnecting that WTF ?!?

just pump the primer (on top of fuel filter) until it is hard, then turn over the engine. it might not run 100% the first time due to air in the lines. just prime again, and then turn over

Lol this guy ^^^^

The idea of disconnecting the fuel filter return line is to eliminate most of the air that will be trapped by filling your tank and priming the filter is not only gaining fuel from the tank but at the same time is putting pressure to where the air is which crates a bad air lock. And by the way if I ever run my car dry I much rather have the air bled half way then not at all. Think more damage would be done trying to start it with air for a good 5 to 10 seconds before the fuel kicks in. Yeah real good for ya engine =.=

How is it any different from installing a new filter?
When I put a secondary filter in, I primed it, started the car, it ran for a second then stalled. So I pumped the fuel primer until the filter bowl was full and away it went.
All good, no dramas, no need to disconnect any extra stuff.

There shouldn't be any need to 'crack injectors' on these and even if you did have to, you've got to disassemble a fair bit to get access to them.

Just take the line off and pump till theres a constant stream. Put it on and pump till firm and away you go. I personally have never had a problem with air locks on these as opposed to some older mechanical injection diesel like the old 2H engines and the like.

Thanks guys it's running now.

What's the pop (whistle) noise when it is about to start but doesn't, was that back firing?

Its okay GB - he's made 'friends' with the moderators who have deleted at least one of his posts and locked others.
Some silly lads don't want to introduce themselves, cant be bothered searching existing threads making extra work for moderators, and give unmitigated advise contrary to that given from diesel mechanics on the forum.

Back on topic - good post there GeeBung. I'm sure that helped the OP :D

Never heard a popping whistle noise before though. stevessss: Did the noise come from the exhaust or engine bay?

Not sure about cracking injector fittings on CRD stuff, they run some pretty solid pressures and it seems like a really good way to end up with diesel injected fingers and hands which equals hospital for the owner of said fingers and hands. plus your ute still not starting ;)

Absolutely!! Diesel injected humans tend to run a bit rough.

The sad part is we are now getting the N70 overflow on here, not willing to contribute anything meaningful to the forum and amazingly most of them seem to finish high school as fully qualified diesel mechanics who are never wrong.
Anyway thats my whinge for the day........back to the topic at hand 8-)

G'day deadlybeast,

The noise came from engine bay when it would start up momentarily, it would cut out after a pop/whistle (not a bang) sound which I thought was backfire.
