Need something to get you rolling?

plain 205/70/r15 tyre advise

Postby davehirst on Mon, 05 Dec 2011 2:33 +0000

I have trolled through the forums and i can find lots on huge tyres... but.
I run a workmate ( i am a tradie) only on the tar around town.
Wondering about a quiet tyre that is good in the wet, should i increase width (would this cuase more aqua planige).
Why do people increase the diameter ? would this help.
I am a novice re tyres so an explanation of these things would be appreciated. Or direction to some sites with good info.
thanks.

Running larger tyres over stock helps with ground clearance in off road situations.
They also look good as the larger tyres are mostly wider too giving a agressive stance.

Downfall is that they increase fuel consumption and you will find the performance slightly worse unless you regear your differentials.
You might also need to lift the suspension depending on your tyre size increase.

If you are on tar only I would suggest looking for a slightly wider tyre without increasing the overall tyre diameter too much.

Hope that helps.
Cheers

thanks,
that's a good start,
Do wider tyres increase the aqua planing effect and can anyone recommend a good wet tyre.

The widths you are looking at are not really going to be an issue with aquaplaning, but some tread patterns are better than others at dispersing water from the tread so are better wet weather tyres, others will give you long life but less grip.
Can't really recommend a particular tyre but suggest you have a chat with a couple of reputable local tyre dealers and get a few opinions.
On the internet you can be anything you want. It is strange that so many people choose to be stupid!

Just got a quote today for new Bridgestones: $275 a corner!! Bloody hell. Gotta be cheaper to get some falcon rims off flea-bay or ford forums? I bet the total diameter is out thou.
