Possible Engine Conversions

Postby Tureri on Mon, 17 Jan 2011 6:11 +0000

Hey, Im new to this forum and I have followed the guidelines and searched it for the better part of an hour to find an answer to this, but nothing directly relates to what I wanna know.
Im trying to find out what sort of engines you can fit in a 1989 2WD Hilux. I have read about plenty of v8 conversions and v6's on the 4X4 hiluxes but can you put a 6cyl, say a 202 into the 2wd one? and if so whats involved. Any help would be majorly appreciated :)

I did read of it been done on another site but i wanna make sure etc.

My mate kel is an old fisherman who told us he fitted his rusty 1981 hilux ute with a petrol 3.3l (202 cu inch) holden straightsix, he kept the diff ratios the same so he'd get better low down grunt to cart off his heavy pilchards. He told us is fuel economy was sheet and the motor revved its guts out but it excelled in its purpose of being the only fishermans ute able to cart full loads up the sand dunes. Hope i posted this right haha

Be better off doing a google search for the 2wd version conversions. There are heaps of options, 5Ltr holdens, Gen 3 5.7Ltr chevs, turbo twin cams that are nearly bolt ins, or by a 1/2 cut V8 lexus and go with that.

Keep in mind that unless you want to regear the unit, a 4cyl will better match the gearing as they run at a higher rev anyway.

Even a look through the CRS site (castlemaine rod shop) or Marks adaptors will give you heaps of info.

Although given the cluey crew that lurk around here, Im sure you will get heaps of better info than I can give you.

Good luck with it though and keep us posted.

Thanks guys.
If it easier to fit I would go to a 3.8 Holden Calais engine but unfortunately I cant go to the V8's or over 200kw.
Thank the Queensland Goverments P plate restrictions!
If the engine in this ute is in amazing condition is there some simple mods i can use to up the power up? Doubt it will be but may as well explore some options :)

From what i read under a another forum, a QT Officer posted that
however, in a nutshell, it's saying that you cannot drive a car with an engine that has modifications that require a modification plate." `Darren_L http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/general-discussion/81581-qld-p-plate-mod-restrictions.html

Is it currently diesel or petrol ??
A 3RZ can be played with to put out some decent figures and is a very easy swap to your rig.

As far as i know with swapping out an engine,
You cant fit anything older then the build date of car,
Must have equal or better emissions standards,
And if the engine in newer then build date of car then emissions stands of engine now apply to whole car.

Also if a 4 cylinder was in there before it will be hard to fit anything longer then 4 cylinders,
If i were you idd look at a v6 231ci Holden replacement out of a vy with trans and wire loom if i were you,
you'll pick them up for around 2g and the kit from CRS is around 1g bolt in and go with 190+ kw in a 1200kg car, thats 160kw/per tonne, in comparison to a new hsv clubsport @170kw/per tonne
farting is alot like jxxxxxg off. both provide instant gratification, but neither is a long term solution to the actual problem......................

Not a hundred percent sure as i spoke to the guys missus who didnt know masses about it, but it'd likely be a petrol. I'll try and find out for sure though.
Thanks John, thats very helpful to know.
Mr Dj, what sort of price would you expect to pick a 3RZ up for?
Thanks a bunch guys, better quality advice then 96% of googles results.

i have seen a 1ggte from a old soarer fitted in a 80's mod lux, this is a 6 cyl 2l motor but for a P plater and a bit easier, newer and more reliable go a 4 cyl like a non turbo nissan sr20. i assume it has a carby 2.4l in it? mabee the later 2.7 lux motor? or a transfer case, front diff and a 3l turbo diesel!

L67 FTW.
Keep it stock, then after you get off your P's, start modding it.
