new engine needed.

Postby rainz on Mon, 18 Oct 2010 5:52 +0000

hi,
i have got a 1985 hilux xtra cab 2wd 2.0L ute.
the rings are starting to go in the motor and was thinking of upgrading the motor. it is a 3y engine.
1st of all: what engines could i fit in it to upgrade it without having to do everything.
2nd: if i have to do a full conversion, could i put a v8 in it or is it to much hassle and money.
3rd: is there anywhere in the south/east vic where i could get an engine for it.
4th: is there any place to get a engine removed and another installed.
and last: what cost would i be looking at this to be done.

any help in this matter would be very helpful as i am not very mechanical.
i know how to do a basic service and thats about it.

thanks every1.

I suggest a second hand 3RZ engine....2.7 litre efi 4 cylinder....

they are light, they are torquey and also rev out good.

it would be ideal for your needs....a V8 although it produces heaps of ggrunt would be really heavy over the front end in comparison.

3rz for bang for buck or if you have the cash go a 1uz its actually not much heavier than the 3rz being all alloy 8-)

Think about the rest of the utes condition, is it worth spending 2-3 grand to do a conversion if not more, if planning to keep it for a while longer I would put a 4y back in it, this should bolt straight in, may have to replace frt eng pipe, pick up a used 4y for maybe 600-990 pending condition/milage done. South east is that Brissy way try gold coast 4wd wreckers there pretty good.
Otherwise I would cut Your losses and start again, maybe on a ln106 next model up, or bite the bullet and buy a kun26 hilux current shape
or look up marks adapters if u want to do a engine conversion, that will give you an idea on way will be need, prices to do a conversion, and a couple of engine ideas.
Hope this helps

Commodore v6 is a very common conversion for them, you can get all the adapters off the shelf.

3RZ is a common choice for your model lux as it will bolt straight up to 3Y chassis mounts and the gearbox is compadible with RZ bellhousing. All you pretty much have to do is swap everything over from the RZ donor and it will run.
