What's The Diff?

Postby bocka on Thu, 10 Jun 2010 7:30 +0000

G'day guys. I have a 2002 SR5 with an ARB airlocker in the rear. I am picking up my new 2010 SR tomorrow. I was wondering if the rear diff's are the same. Can I swap the airlocker to the new Hilux and vice versa? Alternatively can I swap the whole rear ends?

Thanks in advance

Yes I think you should be able to. I think it will bolt in, but the diff ratios are probably different so it won't match the front. The front diff is not swappable as the new model has an 8" diff v's the earlier 7.5" diff. Check the part numbers in the ARB catalog on their website and it will tell you if the locker is compatible between models.

what spec 2002 hilux do you have? It'll help me let you know what diff ratio you have in the rear of it and if tis worthwhile keeping that ratio and just doing the front diff ratio on the 2010 at the same time....

had someone ask me the same thing the other day....yep, the 2002 turbo diesel has 3.73 diff ratio so you will be able to swap the centers straight over with the new one in the rear.....

easy....save you alot of time and hassle.

good luck.

But that will only work if it is the Auto. The current model has a 3.5 ratio diff in the Manual and 3.73 in the Auto. It is all in the drive train Gearing bible sticky thread.

Both the old and new hilux's are manual. So that would mean it won't work. :?

MY BAD.....your right Rod...I forgot about that.....

would be good to put it in and then try and source a 3.73 front from sone who's upgraded....would help if you put 31 or 32" tyres....

like rod said, check the bible out..heaps of info in there.
