I no the guys in the states do this conversion pretty often with the 4runners and such,

dunno if I would be keen on doing it though,

Better of in my opion buying a 2wd, and buying a fd up 4wd and body swap.
Truckless no more

93 4runner
Sas
33s going to 35s
Twin locked
Reduction gears in transfer case
4.88 diffs
1uz
Soon to have blower on it as well hopefully. :)

Why go to all the effort in swapping the body, the only difference if you are going to SAS it is the transfer?

In my opinion your saving yourself 15g roughly on the price between 2wd and 4wd, that's 15g your ahead from the get go to spend on the likes of a lefty, lockers and all the good bits.

I'm getting excited just talking about it lol

You could build my exact car again for half the price I spent :(

Manual...?

D4D?

I'd buy a V6 Auto.

Auto regardless... such abetter option for wheeling, what it gives away in engine braking it more than makes up for with smoothness and the ability to allow the transmission to do the hard work and drive smoothly, not stall and give your clutch a real hard time.

Team it up with a Lefty, Crawler or dual transfer cases and you'll have an ideal set up.

Add transmission cooler and you'll be set.

What is the attraction to the D4D?

Are you planning on long range touring?
Towing a lot?
A lot of deep water crossings?

If you're not forget the D4D. V6 is such a better option...
1. Cheaper to buy
2. Cheaper to maintain
3. Less chance of motor issues, they are pretty well bullet proof if well maintained.
4. More POWER.
Plus it's the 5 speed Auto in the V6.

Don't get me wrong the D4D's are cool, but they have a lot of issues and you need to spend a good $3K to get decent power out of them.

Ideal set up in terms of build ease, cost and drivability:

V6
Auto
Lefty - I've got one on the shelf
4.1 diff ratio's
35's

You'll find a heap of V6 Auto dual cab 2WD's as well... al lot more than the D4D's that's for sure.

Also why the Dual Cab? You got kids?
Extra Cab looks cooler, and more usable tray space.

Anyway sorry to bombard you with all of this, but with all of our collective experience here at MR and BC the above scenario is the truck we would all build if we were starting from scratch and going down the 2WD to 4WD conversion path.
Well actually Bud would build a single cab 2.7 and sit it on the limiter all day

Cheers,
Matty

I just prefer Diesel engines. Unfortunately they don't seem to make a 2wd diesel auto in dual cab or extra cab or at least I can't find any for sale.

Fuel consumption is the issue with the petrol
Planning on doing trips to cape York and the like when my truck is finished, have alway been told diesel is more reliable and will last longer..

Dual cab is just more useable. No where to put a sub in a extra cab unless you want to tie it to the back seat. Whereas a sub fits perfectly behind rear seat in a dually
And it gives me an option to chuck mates in the back if I have to.

But if an extra cab comes up at the right price ill definitely consider it. You are right they do look better.
No kids. but yes to missus. and they do have the annoying possibility of popping up when you least expect it haha.

I'm open to suggestions on the diesel vs Petrol debate.
And also extra cab vs dual cab.

Still got about a month till I get insurance payout anyway but if I do find a bargain I'm sure I can dig deep enough in my pockets to buy it.

Cheers Alex

Go the extra cab. I made a custom sub box to mount over the centre footwell. Plenty of room to move seats and sit at the back. Go the petty. More hp and same tourque just at different revs. It's a no brainer. The auto v6 is super smooth. Coupled with a vmn 3 drive throttle controller and exhaust it will be awesome. Had my v6 for a year and I smash the engine and nothins failed on me yet.

The one thing I don't like about sr5s is the carpet flooring.

So with that in mind is it possible to buy the rubber flooring that sr's have and how much is it?
Can't seem to find it on eBay...
