Regearing the diffs

Postby csale on Sat, 07 Apr 2012 6:28 +0000

Greetings all!
I have been searching and reading and i believe i am more confused about this topic than before as it relates to my year hilux. I am now running 275/70/16 tyres on my 2004 1KZ manual SR5, and wish to re-gear and install lockers at the same time. My current tras/axle code is A01B.

I don't believe swapping used parts into my rig is a viable choice for me based on (zero) availability in my location.

What I currently believe is the best way forward is to purchase aftermarket ring and pinion to regear my diffs in front and rear to 4.58:1 (or should it be 4.10:1?) ratio.

Ive been trying to figure what is the correct part on http://www.nitro-gear.com/ring-pinions/ to fit my application... What type of Diff does a pre-2005 SR5 have on the front? Is it a clamshell on the front and / or rear? is it a "reverse" ring and pinion in the front because its IFS? Are there any other recommendations for aftermarket 4.58 diff gears?

Any guidance in the right direction is appreciated...

judging by what i know about your trans axle code you can have either 4:1 or 4:3, now with your 275 your tyres will be about a 32", id would check to see what ratio you have before you start buying gears, there is a way to jack your rear up and turn the tyres to count the amount of times your pinion spins to your tyres, im not sure what tyres your truck came with stock i so i cant reall tell you what gears are to get, but as a rule i think you should be good with the next size gear up!!! either 4:3 or 4:5

Pretty sure the 1KZ's ran a 3.75 ratio......ill double check tomorrow but it was alot different than the others.

which ring gear ratio you end up going for ultimately depends on which tyre diameter you want to run.

so first step...find exactly which ratio you are running, next step is tell me what diametr and Ill work out whats the ideal ratio for you.

PM me tomorrow to remind me to find out for you.

I can confirm that your vehicle came out with the 3.727 diff gears as standard.

therefore, 4.3:1 would be perfect for 33's, and 4.5's would be perfect for 35's :ugeek:

hi mate,
another option (to which im pursueing to run 33" bighorns on my lux) is transfer case gears.
you can buy these from a website called "low range off road" and there a simple fit. ive have done one at home before to a mates sierra and it wasnt to hard. they set him back $700 for brand newies. how much did u find out it was to get the diffs re geared?

Will cost me $US 400 in parts plus install kits for front and rear. The cost in addition to there being some play in my rear diff; I will be regearing at the diffs and installing a rear locker at the same time.

Thanks for the info though, it is good to know.

You cannot swap transfercase gear in your hilux csale becase your hilux runs a chain driven transfercase.

your option in this regard is to either fit a crawl box in front of it or to swap the chain case out for a gear driven case and then fit the 4.7 gears into that.

Thats not that difficult a proposition in that gear driven cases are somewhat affordable, and your hilux still has the right hand drop setup the same as the gear driven cases do.

It would be a matter of finding the correct bellhousing/adaptor plate to fit up.

Yea, best to stick with the tried and true... keeping it simple and regearing at the diffs.

Thanks

Ok, so it seems that no one but snakeracing carries an aftermarket 4.3 R&P for the 7.5 inch ring diameter IFS diff:
http://store.snakeracing.com.au/~snaker ... 558eb15c4b

Does anyone have any suggestions of where else i can find this ratio R&P for the IFS front, as $620 is overkill; in fact all of snakeracing's prices are on the high end. Don't get me wrong, I have their 2" extended shackle in my rig right now and its a great product, but I can get a 4.1 R&P for less than $200 elsewhere?

No idea.... But I see no aftermarket offering of the 4.30 for the 7.5 inch diff. Option found in used including the 3rd; so no more worries here.
