This year, probably going to areas around Laverton (NE of Kalgoorlie). Lots of areas out there and will move around depending on what we find once we're there.

I'm running a GPX 5000 but for out there the important thing is navigation which is what my laptop is for. On the laptop I'm running OziExplorer with a stack of off the shelf maps as well as maps made from Tengraph and sat images. I've also got a s..t load of Old Gold Mine waypoints that help home in on decent ground. Still, you can't research how 'hammered' the ground is. You need to get out there and give it a go.

yeah, I've heard Laverton area can be good. tis a bit far away for us tho, so we'll prob stick with areas around Sydney

Sorry, can't help you out on the Garrett except to say you will be lucky to find any gold nuggets with it. It's really only the Minelab SD, GP and GPX machines that will find you gold in Australia.

There is a good used market for those machines so its really the turn over cost you cop after the up front for a new or used.

I one and only time that I detected was with my mates fancy minelab one ( not sure model) and when I first walked through the bush it keep going beep beep in this very rhythm fashion. But only when I walked. No one told me that you can't wear steel caps when pinging. Dohh! The owner of the detector who was a serious prospector had a good ol laugh. His best nug was 1.2kg

how do you go looking for gold out bush because im pretty sure its still legal to shoot someone prospecting on your land ... do you need permits and can only go to special areas ect

Hey gold stalker,
Just wondering if you have ever detected for gold on a salt lake?? I've herd of people doing it in the west? Just wondering what your take on it would be? I'm thinking of doing a trip up around tarcoola in SA. Thers a few old gold mines around up ther, and from what research I've done via the web they reckon salt lakes are hotspots for gold, as they were old rivers many year ago... Just wondering if this is true or not and worth doing a trip.

Short answer is 'No' but you will need 'salt coils' for the different interference.
Never heard of 'Tarcoola, SA'. Lake Cary, WA (south of Laverton) is well known.

I believe it can also be very 'dangerous' in regards getting bogged - vast expanses of hard to see soft spots. Best not to go alone, etc; and might be an idea to carry a ground anchor.

The eastern edges of salt lakes are good spots as the prevailing westerlies strip the small dunes away over time. I don't detect but know many who do and they target the edges of salt lakes.. DO NOT DRIVE ON SALT LAKES.believe me as I work on them (mining exploration). They can be hard as concrete one moment and then you'll break through into bottomless brown spooge and you'll go no further
