Buying an older Hilux

Postby peeeete on Sat, 26 Jun 2010 6:37 +0000

Hey guys,

I'm new here... My old car is dying so I am going to finally get off my arse and buy a proper reliable car... i'm thinking a 94 onwards diesel dual cab lux... I dont know how much I should spend, what to look for, how much I should spend etc...

I want to use it mainly for touring, and 4bying to the fun spots to camp. Not so much rockcrawling and winching... It'll be my daily drive as well as I'm an apprentice carpenter.

I'm in Brissie and getting a personal loan to finance this (hopefully)...

I found this:

Looks good to me let me know what you think!
Cheers

G'day Pete, well as no ones talking I'll say hello.

I had a quick look at the ad. last night. The pics look OK but nothing like hands on drive and inspection. I'd find someone who is preferably a mechanic or similiar to go with you.

If the mileage is right, ie 12,000km/year, which is very low, then it could be just what you want.

You won't have to spend dollars lifting it either to get ground clearance like these new trucks. They don't have the very nice 3l turbo of the D4D but as long as you don't want to tow to much or to heavy they have adequate power.

Mine did a rear diff after about 11yrs but otherwise was a very reliable truck.

Check the oil was changed very 5,000km - very important.

A lot have a crack in the engine bay on top of the mudguards, worth a check and also some D/Cabs leak behind the rear LHS passenger seat.

I had my 96 DC for 13yrs and only sold it to have a better work/tow vehicle......sometimes wish I hadn't. It had 176,000km (one owner genuine) and with a RWC sold privately for $11,000 last year.

Not as done up as the one you're looking at though.

Good luck with your search Pete ! :D

PS.drop a PM to me if you need to ask something.
