Greasing engine pulleys?

I have developed a white noise sort of sound from around the pulley area that turns into a sqeak,though I cannot pinpoint which one it is. I was thinking maybe the pulleys on the front of the donk are a bit dirty/rusty after all the flooded muddy roads crossed this year. How should I grease them? WD40? Any help appreciated.

WD40 work it will probably be the idler pulley that keeps it all tight mine makes a bit of noise from time to time a bit off a squirt while running soon quietens it down Cheers

It could be the belt on the edge of the profiles,dont use WD man,use a teflon spray on the belt first whilst its running, if it doesnt go away use tack 2 on the pullies. Mine was the a/c pulley was dry ,teflon fixed it
Wd40 will just dry out and the noise will come back...

Wire brush while running to clean the belt. Then of still there, Dry-lube.

If you can get the bearings out of the pulleys, replace them.
They're a bit expensive though, close to ten bucks each

If its making a noise now it's probably too late for "greasing" them. If it was me I'd replace them ASAP. I don't much around with this sorta thing. My old va commodore started to Squill oneday on the tensioner Pully. I greased it and it failed in spectacular fashion about 200km later that day. Was not cool

Mine does squeak but only while cold.

Replace the belt. The problem with multi rib belts is that is that they don't wear and crack like the old style v belts. Because of this they very rearly get replaced, even my mechanics. They do still wear which can be seen by the gap between the ribs getting bigger. This causes the belt to run on the peaks of the pulley rather then on the tapered section like it is meant to. Next time you are at supercheap have look at the gap between the ribs on your belt, then walk in side and have a look at any multi rib belt they have and see how narrow the grooves in the belt should be. You will be shocked.

You can buy a go/no go gauge from belt manufactures that measures the gap of old belts to check if they are beyond the wear limit.

Tried pulling the belt off and spinning the pulleys on their own?
It 'could' be the belt, but that is one of the first tests to isolate it.

Easiest way to determine if it's the belt or a pulley is with the engine running pour some water on the fan belt. If the squeak goes away or gets worse then it's the belt. If it doesn't change then it's a bearing.
They are sealed bearings so the water won't effect them.

If it is a bearing then do all of them at once and the belt. There is no point just replacing one because the others are likely to give up the ghost as well before too long.

OK this prob is very intermittent. I wanted to isolate the problem with testing but every time I start it now nothing........ Oh welll can't do much more than wait til it returns. I did just replace the intake hose running of the air filter due to discovering a bit of a tear , thought that could have been the noise but the sound definitely wasn't coming from that area of the engine bay. Coincidence?

OK I am pretty sure it's not the Air con bearings as I removed belt and played with it. No gritty sound when spun independently. I conclude that it may be coming from the alternator or the turbo. Hard to tell. Could it possibly be coming from the block? I used the Screwdriver trick to listen but it's all vague. It is coming from the right hand side, I could have sworn from the air con compressor but alas no luck! Will keep hunting.

Ok news just in! I ended up pulling the alternator out after replacing all belts to no avail and took it to 3 different auto elecs. I did feel there was some grit or grime in the bearings due to a slight noise coming from the alternator when I spun the pulleys. First auto elec said that it was more than likely still the belts, the second said repair of alternator would be $500, due to it being labour intensive and would be better of buying a new one from him for around $600, the third said he would open it up replace bearings and bushes test it and this would hit me in the back pocket to the tune of, wait for it......... $70!!!!
Needless to say I went with option 3. When the Mrs picked it up and brought it home, he had the apprentice clean and paint the cover whilst he repaired the bearings and put new brushes in. He ziptied the faulty parts to the now revived alternator after doing a ampage check too. One of the bearings was so worn it had severed one half of the casing and the other side of the internal casing was all but worn through. Amazed at the service he provided and am disgusted at the dollar chasing scum that had no real intension of doing their job. For the good mechanics out there that show an honest Australian nature of integrity I salute you. As for the gaggle of bums that aren't fit to green slip a rig, you are the reason I trust few with my pride and joy! The Lux is now growling like a tiger and ready to hit the beach.

tight does anyone torque pulleys? how tight were they when you took them off put them back equally as tight?
