Turbo or V6?

Postby jarrad2314 on Thu, 15 Dec 2011 2:22 +0000

I'm stuck with a choice here, I've been thinking of what to do with my lux' whether I should turbo it or whether I should sell it and get an RV6 4runner. So I thought to ask anyone if they have had previous experience with either one, both or have an opinion. By the way I own an LN106 lux' so it's a 2.8 D (3L)

Cheers,
Jarrad

if you want more balls look into the VN-VR v6 commodore conversion...dont go the 4 runner, the lux you have is the best hilux made for offroad, keep it an work off it as a start point

Yeah I've thought of going down the path of the commodore V6, but I don't really have the extra money to re-engineer it and all that jazz, with the turbo hopefully it should be cheaper. It's just hard to find a price anywhere

turbo kits are about 5k for a patrol so im guessing it would be the same for a lux...that doesnt include fitting and tuning and everything that come with hooking up a turbo t work properly

Just found one on Ebay for $2300 but that is excluding fitment, might check with Berrima Diesel

The one on ebay is from a 4x4 shop, quite near me actually. By the sounds of it all of the turbo kits use a mitsubishi turbo. Yeah amitch the engine is in surprising condition for nearly 400,000 K on the clock, I really want the power of the petrol but still have the waterproof qualities of the diesel

its a gamble putting a turbo on a high km motor mate...you would probl throw the turbo on, drive it for a bit and then be up for a rebuild or at least head work and injectors...do you know if that motor need and pump work done to keep up with the turbo?

Yeah Dan i'm tempted to rebuild it at the same time to avoid the whole problem of the engine shitting itself. Again the problem is finding a decent diesel mechanic, pretty sure the only one is Berrima :P

I don't think Berrima does rebuilds.

I personally wouldnt touch anything holden with a 10ft pole.....

the 3.8 V6 is a boat anchor of an engine, very rough and low tech and very ancient in design.

Although many people have used these motors in engines swap alot of people have also had problems with it afterwards. The engines werent designed for 4x4's so the stresses that 4x4's put these engines through tend to make then leak oil and bust seals more often than they should.

If you want to go a V6, I would highly reccomend the 5VZ 3.4 litre out of the 03 Hilux or Prado 90.

the Prado version has a taller manifold so a bodylift may be needed (1") to keep it under the bonnet, thou a mild torque increase is the return.

They are from the VZ engine family which is the same as the 3VZ found in the RV6 4 runner thou a much more refined engined.

Therefore being already in the 4 runner, engine mounts are accessible.

the 5VZ has 6 bolt mains so is very strong. A good set of extractors really opens them up as the factory ones are very restrictive due to space limitations in the engine bay.

Many have said the 5VZ engine design is exactly the same as the 1UZ V8 minus the front 2 banks of cylinders.

If you google the conversion there are several that have done it. And by keeping toyota quality you know the engine is going to last you.

Youll b looking at big coin doing a rebuild and turbo conversion, it would be a good motor when done but bang for buck is just not there

Yeah I definitely know it'll cost a pretty penny :P I was also thinking of an old larger diesel, straight six pootrol or landbruiser either that or when I get off my P's go with a diesel V8, of course that's if it will fit :?

I love Max's response :D, f$@#&% dumping a commwhore motor into a 4x4. Love when people put commo motors into a lux etc, Such a silly mistake as max has stated.

Jarrad don't mean to throw a spanner in the works but you might be sorter forgetting option three? Which is to hold on to coin save up and trade up to a newer model hilux.
Turbo and to rebuild an old motor is going to cost you alot of coin but you will never recoup that money.
v6 commodore same again and all the headaches that go along with it. There will be a heap of hiden cost that will simply add up.
The forerunners still and old bus and you could end up thrown a heap of coin to keep it running.
just maybe your better off putting it towards a newer model and puttn up with what you've got for now.
What ever you decide good luck and i hope it works out for you, jst thought i would put it out there.
