Hope your not looking for a performance increase with that conversion..... performance was not an option with either of those engines

if there is nothing wrong with your 2.8 then your wasting your time and money, if you do however want to do the swap, make sure you get the earlier non efi 5l engine, it will make life alot easier

I would reccomend an early 1KZ out of an imported surf with a mechanical injection pump rather than the electrical one....you'll get the benefit of increase performance and no electronics like the later model versions had.

Be careful with the import 3.0L had one in my 99 Lux (factory fitted) think was (KZN165R) great performance but could not stop it from getting hot real hot, its the only reason i sold it, loved my old lux, tried everything, my brother in law has it now & he tried the only thing I hadn't & rebuilt the pump & yep still gets hot. spoke to alot of mechanics & other owners & the answer was get used to it they just get hot. Some parts for this motor have to be bought from toyota, repco etc don't have them in there books like a top radiatior hose for example could get a bottom but the top you had to buy off toyota.

They are completely different to a 5L not just a 5L turboed

Found out when that motor went into the Prado (2000 - 2002 ) they called it a 1KZ-TE 3.0 L they changed the head, turbo, Radiator & intercooled it which stopped it from getting hot. This is the motor you want. If you can find one & willing to pay for it.

My advice would be to just Turbo the 3L they get along great turboed & are a great reliable motor then you could put money into something else.

The reason i ask is i have just purchased a 95 model extra cab, it had a second hand engine from wrecker fitted just before i became the owner, unfortunatelly this engine has also gone POP. I am not interested in another second handie, incase it goes pop just after the warranty has expired also. So before i purchase new or reco engine i was wondering for a littlr extra cost and a little extra effort could i get a few extra cubes. I am not nieve enough to think it "just bolts straight in", nothing ever does. I paid an extra $200 for the car and got the old engine also, it still has injectors, pump, etc. But no doubt the same thing, probably crank and rods will be busted in both. If i rebuild 3L (2.8l) it will be made to accommodate a turbo, does anyone know if full rebuild kits are available for this mod including turbo, manifold, ie everything.

I wouldnt reccomend turboing the 2.8....they are not the best motors to add turbo's too and have alot more problems overheating than the 1KZ's ever had..... the 2.8 bottom end although strong when naturally aspirated isnt designed for a turbo.....the 1KZ's are on the other hand.....
