If they are both non turbo LN167 models it will, otherwise I'm unsure.

diff stuffed ? mine is making a noise and i've been quoted $1100 plus fitting or $650 for secondhand ! either way i'm taking the cv joints out to save time and money.

97 model could either be an LN106 or LN167, LN167 started production in August of 97. I am unsure if the ratio is the same. I do however have a front diff out of my LN167 diesel that I will be ripping out of mine on the 9th of dec

i'm getting a hilux 2000 front diff and i've been told there are the same. i'm doing mine at the moment.'97 LN167. not sure if it would be cheaper to do it myself or get the 4wd people to do it. it's just a matter of swapping them over. i can do the cv joints no problem but i'm not sure about the diff. been trying to find out how to do it.not much info on it. have you done it before ? if so, is it very difficult ?

I have swapped alot of early model ones I stir away from ifs ASAP. This is the first hilux I have had ifs in and I'm about to cut it out. If u can do the cvs the diff isn't too much more work it's normally just unbolt drive shaft and all the diff bolts and it will come out

went in to the workshop to see actually what was making that whoopm whoopm noise. it seemed to be coming from the front diff but after having it on the hoist with all wheels running the mechanics came to the conclusion that it was the needle bearing in the right side of the wheel hub. i was told if i take the little gold cap off, then undo the cover plate with the 6 nuts, being careful of the washers and cones ,then undo the 12mm nut that goes into the end of the cv axle, the one with the grooves in and run it and see if the noise disappears. well it did. so now all i have to do is replace the needle bearing on the inside of the wheel hub. saves me a heap of $'s i tell you !

glad u have sorted it out. tbh though replacing a diff is easy and cheap (2nd hand) if that scenario ever came about ;)

thanks, it was driving me nuts. all i have to do now is take off the hubs and get the bearings done. i think i'll take them both off and get all the bearings done as it has 204,000 on the clock. i'll attack the this week.
cheers

in the end it wasn't the diff or the bearings. it was a faulty cv joint. only 2 months old too. it had a crack in the axle and was raised a bit causing this whoomp whoomp noise as i drove. it was a longitudinal crack about 1 1/2 cm long right over the needle bearing which caused it to make the noise. replaced the bearing as a precautionary measure and now when i drive - silence ! thank goodness.
cheers
