JAKES Tough Tourer

Postby Treash on Wed, 10 Sep 2014 6:14 +0000

Both those trips look rad, what a way to spend trout opening!
You got any more details on your Otways trip? Heading up there in a few weeks and those pics look sick!

Re: JAKES Tough Tourer - thrown a drive belt!

900 KM trip out bush 600k of that off road...
Get home drive 3 km down the road with the kids and 'rattle rattle... clunk'... lost power steering, engine light and battery light on.... Pull up on centre median strip and she has thrown a drive belt! It was sheered down the middle and wrapped up everywhere....
Stuff getting a tow im so close to home i just limp it through the back streets with nearly no steering (no belt= no power steering pump), stopping every km because she is heating up in the red (no belt = no fan and water pump) Worried about the battery dieing (no belt = no alternator) i turn off the lights and wipers (absolutley pissing down!).
Back at home closer inspection one of the idler pulleys has exploded with little ball bearings everywhere. wiggling the other pulleys they all seem to have a bit of play.
Took it to my bloke up the road and he replaced all 4 pulleys (if one has gone its only time until the others go) 3 idlers and the tensioner unit and new drive belt.
Man am i glad that didn't happen out bush... would of been a 300km tow home!

This is the idler pulley that collapsed and through the belt

All theses pulleys with bearings have done over 170,000 so $600 well spent for reliability IMO :D

3 idlers? I count 2 idlers on the 1KD, one on the tensioner arm and one above the fan pulley. Am I missing a pulley somewhere?

Cheers mate, yeah i thought there would have been a lot more old fisho's around... maybe still a bit cold for them, I was pretty far in the bush a lot of blokes just fish around the lake and the inlets.

No real details on the Otways trip, we based ourselves in Apollo bay at a cabin for a few days and just went out and did day trips to waterfalls with the kids, pointed the lux up a few tracks on the way.
The 'Old coach Rd' at princeton off the GOR are the pictures on the sandy track... was a fun little run through some wet sand and ruts

Did you keep the old idlers as spares? You can get the 6302 bearings for about $10 a piece.. Just some food for thought.

Been some serious maintenance/servicing on the lux the last week in prep for a few small and big trips over the summer.
All the usual oil filter, air filter fuel filter.
New Koyo radiator, hoses, clamps... Trying to prevent overheating up the High country like last year :?
New genuine thermostat.
New genuine A/C condensor + full A/C service... man it is nice and crisp now... doesnt smell like stale mud
New slotted brake discs and pads in the front
New drums, shoes and cylinders in the rear + braided extended brake line.
Wow its great to have brakes again!!

Got a few little canopy and camping mods to do and then she's ready for another round :D

Got 2 little high country trips planned + a 2 week trip down the coast along to Robe SA :D

Jake, iv'e just spent 10 hours of my 12hour nightshift on/off reading your build :D (as you can tell it's pretty quiet leading upto xmas on site) .Awesome truck mate. So may good ideas.

You have just helped me make a final decision on how to set my tray up after me being undecided for 12 months on canvas, or twin toolboxes , or getting a tub and fibreglass canopy. etc. I already have roo rtt.

Glad you kept the lux mate. Keen to keep going on with my build now, (much to my mrs dissapointment haha)
Hopefully I can get a build thread going myself soon.
Have a good xmas with your family mate...

Hi Jake!

Mate, firstly what a top looking ute!
I found your build looking for rtt ideas, and have read through from there. Looks like I might have to look back and check it out from day dot.
Many thousands of $$$ spent for sure! You must have deep pockets mate, anytime I need to do anything on the rig, it firstly has to be thoroughly explained to the missus of the mods importance, the cost and time frame.
Renovating at the same time, so little time actually spent on the car between work and a bit of play. And also means the money is tight.

Really love the rtt/ canopy build and wouldn't mind putting my own spin on it for mine.

Cheers mate, hope to catch you on the tracks somewhere
Andrew

Has been built up at home over 7 years so very slow... still not finished.
Good luck with your build.
